Since many buildings constructed along the lines of Art Nouveau Architecture are found in the region, the school of style plays an important role in studying the culture of the place.
The Jugendstilsenteret Museum and Competence Centre is a cornerstone of culture in the town. The Centre houses various exhibitions and collections, which narrate various stages of the growth and development of the Art Nouveau Architecture School in the region. The collections also bear testimony to the town fire that ravaged the region in 1904.
The Famous Norwegian Food Festival
The Norwegian Food Festival organized in Alesund each year is a prime tourist attraction. The festival is a great chance to sample some classic cuisine, as well as an opportunity to sink your teeth into some creative experimental cooking. The festival is organized towards the end of August every year, and for a whole week visitors can partake in all kinds of Scandinavian cuisine. From concerts organized in the great outdoors, to food and wine stalls and events, to cookery competitions, the festival is delightful mixture of gastronomic treats, culture and festivity.
Travelling Around In Alesund
For visitors, it is advisable to find accommodation in the centre of the town, since most of the town attractions are clustered near the centre. Many tourist attractions and important places are within walking distance, and if one is able to find a place close to the city centre, commuting during the vacation becomes much easier.
Tourists can also opt to use the bus service provided in the city. There are routes to most places in Alesund, however after 5pm on Saturdays, and through the day on Sundays, the bus service is limited. On such days one can also hire taxis. There are two major taxi companies working in the region and one can book their service via the telephone. However, it is advisable to avoid using the taxi service in holidays since it is a very expensive means of transport in Norway. Taxis can be exorbitantly priced during the evenings and even in the day; a very short distance may cost you around 200 NOK.
