Svalbard – Polar Bears And Other Wildlife

Polar Bears photy by Ms Expedition visitnorway.com

Wildlife In Svalbard

There are three categories of indigenous land mammals found in Svalbard, namely the Svalbard reindeer, the Arctic fox and of course, the polar bear. The polar bear is a special source of attraction in Svalbard, as people from all over the world come to see this famous Arctic animal. Out of all the animal species found in and around the region, the polar bears are the most adapted to living in the severe environment. Polar bears frequent the Svalbard region during the summer time, when they have to raise their cubs, and they also come here when they miss the chance of getting to the pack ice.

One can also see seals in the region. Sea mammals such as the bearded seal and ringed seal are especially popular in these areas. Coastal regions are home to these animals, and they paint a pretty picture for any Norwegian holiday.

More about Svalbard – Polar Bears And Other Wildlife

Whale watching is extremely popular in these regions. Since areas such as the Lofoten Islands of Norway used to be popular whale hunting grounds, their prospects as whale watching grounds have recently been realized, and hence Svalbard and other parts are now being touted as prime whale spotting places. From the beluga whales and sperm whales to Minky whales, one can take a cruise and spot these gorgeous giants in the water from time to time.

Bird watching is another activity that holds much promise. Svalbard is known to be home to many species of birds, especially in the summer season. Gulls and auks are extremely common in these regions and one can also spot several eagles from time to time. The Ptarmigan is an interesting species that continues to live on the archipelago of Svalbard throughout the year. Many of the birds migrate to warmer climates during the winter season. One can also find the Arctic Tern here during the summer.

Making The Most Of The Wildlife In The Svalbard Archipelago

To be able to truly understand and appreciate the raw natural beauty and the wildlife of the Svalbard region, we recommend signing up for an Arctic Experience in Svalbard with the Baltic Travel Company. This tour package is spread over 5 days and 4 nights and is reasonably priced at £1,935 per person. The Arctic adventure package offers an intimate view of the Arctic Circle and one can see the inspiring beauty of the region up-close. Sightings of the arctic fox and the reindeer are extremely common on this tour package and people often also see the polar bear. The accommodations for this tour package are found on the fringes of the Isfjordm, which is found on the grand Nordenskiöld coast. The stately Svalbard Mountains form a backdrop to the place, while a view of the open sea adds a surreal touch to the surroundings. From safety equipment, accommodation, transport services to meals, guides and visits to local sights and return flights, the Baltic Travel Company takes care of all your needs.
