Riga in the Baltic country Latvia, is European City of Culture 2014, coinciding with them joining the EUR currency from January 1st, this beautiful city will be the cultural epicentre in Europe with a huge amount of cultural events in the pipeline throughout the year. Latvia has given a huge amount to the worlds cultural scene, like for example the Art Nouveau style architecture, a multicultural society with Latvians, Germans, Swedes, Poles, Finns, Norwegians, Russians and so forth, after having been occupied with virtually all those throughout time.
During 2014 all locals will be able to be introduced to a string of music performed by well known Latvian choirs, Opera’s Modern Art performances, Concerts with a variety of music throughout the country, Song Festival, Art Exhibitions, National celebrations, Museums with a huge variety to choose from, like the Amber Museum, National History Museum of Latvia, Turaida Museum Reserve, Latvian Railway History Museum and so much more.
Also on the Art Scene we would like to mention the tragic event in Riga where, among many others, Daina Skadmane, a famous artist despite her very young age. She has, among much other things, created the artwork used by the Latvian President to send to the World leaders:
She also provided to Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Artwork for her collection. Let’s preserve her beautiful artwork in our memory.
If you are planning a holiday in Latvia, note that Riga is a beautiful city in itself and is worth a visit by foot to explore the sights, cafes, restaurants, art scene, parks, concert hall, shopping centres, galleries and Sigulda close by. Riga is also perfectly located for Spa holidays and even Medical Rehabilitation in either Riga or nearby Jurmala, the beach resort that has 50 km ( 35 miles ) of unspoilt, sandy beaches.
And it is perfect to visit nearby Estonia and Lithuania and/or combine it with a Baltic Sea cruise to include St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Stockholm at the same time.
