We pick you up on our bus or minibus in the town centre of Tromsø. The town centre is very compact, so you will easily be able to find the pick up point. We then take you on a 75 minute drive out into the wilderness, to our Camp Tamok. The camp consists of Sami tents and a timber cabin. This is the start and end point for your winter adventure.
Beginning Your Perfect Northern Lights City Break in Tromsø
Tromsø is a vibrant city with no shortage of local culture, cuisine and Arctic nature, just a short distance by air from Oslo and acting as the gateway to the Arctic Circle. It boasts an unparalleled position for visitors keen on combining a Northern Lights chase with a luxurious city break in this beautiful region.
Nestled between mountains, pristine snowy landscapes and glacial lakes, Tromsø is a stunning place to visit. A guided tour of the historic city centre is highly recommended, ensuring you experience all Northern Norway offers without missing out on outdoor adventures, ranging from husky sledding to an ever-popular snowmobile safari.
As night falls and dark skies set in, you can turn your gaze upwards for a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis, among the world's most famous natural phenomenon. For an even closer experience, we’d suggest choosing optional excursions outside of the city where you can immerse yourself in the wonder of the Arctic.
Planning Your Tromsø Northern Lights Holiday Itinerary
The lively city of Tromsø is welcoming, walkable and festive in the winter season, where you can settle down for a warm meal and hot drinks in any of the local eateries or bars, resting your feet by a roaring open fire and sampling the cuisines that are such an integral part of Sami culture.
Most visitors book at least three nights as part of their chosen holiday, and we’d suggest:
- Taking the Tromsø cable car up the Storsteinen mountain for an incredible view of the fjords, city and glaciers in the surrounding area.
- Heading out for a whale watching boat trip, relishing the bracing sea air typical in the Arctic, while looking for some of the rare and unusual species that call the Arctic waters their home.
- Visiting the Polar Museum to learn about the expeditions into the Arctic that have begun in Tromsø and stopping at the Ishavkatedralen, or Arctic Cathedral, an iconic landmark designed to mimic an iceberg.
The sights in and around Tromsø are within easy walking distance, and your chosen hotel could vary from the modern Clarion Hotel – labelled a cultural arena for the Paris of the north – to the budget-friendly Thon Hotel located in the heart of the shopping area.
