Gothenburg

by Göran Assner - VisitSweden

An Introduction to Gothenburg

Gothenburg is a city in Sweden, the second largest in the country after Stockholm. It is also the fifth biggest city in the Nordic region, present on the southwest coast of Sweden. Gothenburg rests on the mouth of the Göta Älv River which runs through the city and is adjacent to the sea. Gothenburg City is the biggest seaport in all the Nordic countries.

The King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden established the city in the early years of the 17th century. At one time Gothenburg acted as the heart of the ship building industry in Sweden but with the development and prevalence of foreign ship yards it lost its significance in the field and several of the dry docks had to be shut.

More about Gothenburg

Today, the harbor regions which were initially the center for all ship building industrial activities are being used by technological firms and educational institutions.

Gothenburg is primarily recognized as an academic city due to the presence of the prestigious Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg apart from being branded as a spot of tourist interest. These universities draw in large number of students and scholars every year from different parts of the world.

Museums in Gothenburg

While touring the city, one should definitely not forget to visit its museums. There are several noteworthy museums in Gothenburg. The Gothenburg Art Museum houses an impressive collection of modern art and is found in the vicinity of a concert hall and a theatre.

The Museum of World Culture focuses on anthropology and ethnography. The museum is a venue for several cultural events throughout the year such as lectures, film screenings and concerts.

The Maritime Museum is dedicated to preserving the maritime history of the city and of the region of West Sweden. The museum displays models of sailing ships and various other exhibits and one can also stand at the “Seaman’s Wife” lookout pillar and enjoy a magnificent view of the harbor.

Festivals and events of Gothenburg

There are several events organized in Gothenburg through the year. The Gothenburg Film festival organized in February each year is the premier cinema event of the city. The festival has gained international prominence and has become one of the biggest Scandinavian film festivals in recent times. Do participate in this festival if you visit the city during this time.

The Kulturkalaset festival is organized every year in August. It is a city festival that is marked by stalls of exotic foods and cuisines, various stalls selling beer in a number of varieties and enchanting musical performances. Cases of underage drinking have forced the city council to minimize the scale of events but visitors can still enjoy the festivities at the parties and events around the city center. This festival, though not internationally renowned, brings out the culture of the city and is characterized by an atmosphere full of cheerfulness, zeal and vigor.

The Julstaden Christmas celebration festival is one of the most vibrant and colorful times of the year. With Christmas lights twinkling everywhere and the trademark spirit of festivity and good cheer all around, this is an exciting time to visit the city.
