Even though the jellyfish roundabout is definitely an unique sightseeing destination, it also has an important function keeping communities on smaller islands viable. Many locals use small car ferries which are often cancelled due to the very unpredictable weather of the Faroe Islands.
The construction of the tunnel started in 2016 and was completed in December 2020. Another similar length tunnel is already under construction and will open in 2023. The deepest point of the tunnel reached the depth of 187 meters below the sea level.
