The museum has been built for the purpose of collecting, preserving and showcasing documents and other related material that relate to the Soviet Union’s occupation of Lithuania for a period of 50 years. The museum is also dedicated to the resistance of the Lithuanian people, and is a testimony to their grief and harsh history, by marking the various executions, deportations and arrests that were conducted during the time of Soviet occupation.
Collections at the KGB Museum
There are different aspects to the collections at the KGB museum. The non-violent resistance of the people as well as the armed struggle with reference to the Forest Brothers has been documented through a series of underground publications, photographs, books and documents. Personal belongings of victims of deportation, execution and arrests during the occupation are also included in the collection. The collection devotes its space to the occupational regime of Lithuania, the anti-Soviet resistance, the anti-Nazi resistance, and the human perspective of this period of history.
The collection at the museum is expanded and maintained using funds that are amassed through donations made by the public.
Planning a Trip to the Museum of Genocide Victims/ the KGB Museum
The Museum of Genocide Victims is open from Wednesday to Saturday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. On Sundays, the Museum of Genocide Victims is kept open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Adults can gain admission to the KGB Museum for 6 Lt, while elderly citizens, students and youngsters can enter the museum for 3 Lt. Entry for disabled people and children under the age of 7 years is free of charge.
