The Krakow Main Square
The Krakow Main Square is one of the earliest landmarks in the city. Also known as Rynek Glowny, the square has been the heart of the city since hundreds of years. The Square was earlier the meeting point and hub for all the merchants and market activities. Now, it is a perfect gathering and starting point for the visitors visiting the city. Even the locals use the Adam Mickiewicz Monument on the square as a gathering point. This landmark leads the trail for other landmarks, museums and attractions.
The Adam Mickiewicz Statue
The Adam Mickeiwicz statue is one of the most prized attractions in the city. Located just a few steps from the St. Adalbert Church, the magnificent statue is surrounded by four other finely crafted allegorical figures. Each figure represents something, i.e. Learning, Poetry, Valor and Motherland. The best time to visit this statue is in December at the time of the Szopki competition.
Flower stalls run by women are situated just north of the statue. These flower stalls have been standing here since medieval times. Between the flower stalls and the statue lies an area that is infested with thousands of pigeons of Karkow. The city amazingly encourages the pigeon population.
Visit the Holocaust at Auschwitz Death Camp in Oswiecim
The famous Auschwitz Death Camp was undoubtedly the largest site of holocaust. This paradoxically famous as well as infamous place is known to have held captive more than one million Jews and people of other nationalities. The people were murdered in the gas chambers and often starved to death. The concentration camp is a sad symbol of the biggest tragedies the world has ever seen. A visit to the camp is a must for everyone who visits the city of Karkow.
Getting to the concentration camp is fairly easy. It takes less than an hour by car on the route 44 to complete the 50 km drive. The camp can also be visited via train or public busses. One can visit Krakow with the Krakow City Breaks tour packages offered by the Baltic Travel Company.
