Tracing The History Of Latvia
The history of Latvia can be traced back to the third millennium BC, when the proto-Baltic predecessors of the Latvian communities chose to call the east coast of the Baltic Sea their home. The people began trade relationships with Byzantine and Rome, and the locally found amber was often exchanged for precious metals. By 900 AD four individual tribes of the Baltic people had been formed in Latvia: the Selonians, the Latgalians, the Semigallians and the Curonians. These tribes, along with the Livonians, formed the heart and soul of the region.
At the start of the 13th century big portions of Latvia as it's recognized today were taken over by German forces. Along with Southern Estonia, these captured territories became the crusader state which then came to be recognized as the Terra Mariana, or Livonia.
In the year 1282 the city of Riga and several others that had evolved over time were incorporated into the Hanseatic League. The city of Riga evolved as a significant location in east-west trading which led to important ties with Western Europe.
The Reformation Period is an important time in the history of Latvia. During the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries there were several upheavals and changes in the region. From the Reformation era, to the fall of the Livonian state and the period when the Latvian region was parted between foreign powers.
