A Look At The History Of Liepaja
During the period of the Great Northern War, the growth and strength of the town was severely crippled, and another large blow to the advancement of the region occured when a plague epidemic killed a large chunk of the population 1710. The onset of the 19th century and the indoctrination of the region into the Russian Empire helped stabilize the situation and the city was once again on its way to prosperity and good times.
The building of the Naval Port from 1890 to 1904 heralded a period of meteoric rise for the region and it became the base for the first ever Russian submarine fleet in the Baltics.
The 20th century brought with it the construction of several Art Nouveau buildings and city parks in the city- a sign of sustained progress.
However, the glory of the region was once again tarnished with the coming of the Second World War when the Nazi forces and the Soviet armies fought in and around the region, and the historic centre of Liepaja was destroyed during the war. Once the war was over, the naval base was annexed by the Soviets and Liepaja was abandoned.
Rallying through the tough times, the people of Liepaja were pioneers in joining the freedom movement that originated in the 1980s and once independence was restored, the city once again regained its glory and beauty.
Liepaja In The Present Times
With a population of 90,000 residents, the city is not very populous and hence ideal for a quiet holiday. The city is divided into two portions: the city center and the Karosta region, which used to be the base for a covert soviet military town. With beautiful beaches, quaint old buildings, colorful streets, lush parks and friendly people, both zones deserve a visit.
