Built in the 13th century by the city founder, the Gediminas Castle has played many roles in the history of city, from being a defense bastion to being a prison and now being one of the biggest tourist spots in the region. The castle was built in wood initially and was later covered by big stonewalls until the 17th century when it was almost decimated by Russian troops. The castle has been properly renovated and fully refurbished, thus making it an attractive and historically intact tourist attraction. There is a museum within the castle, dedicated to preserving the history of Lithuania, with a special focus on Vilnius. The museum contains various models of the region through different points in history, a number of historical artifacts and relics and other archaeological objects.
Visit The Hill Of The Three Crosses
The Hill of the Three Crosses is a landmark in Lithuania, devoted to the memory of seven Franciscan monks who were tortured by a pagan group, crucified and then thrown into the river Vilnia. The tragedy occurred before Lithuania embraced Christianity and the monument is a memorial for the monks and also to mark the importance of Christianity in the country. The monument was marked by the erection of three crosses in the 17th century, on top of the hill close to the Gediminas Castle. During the Soviet period the crosses were destroyed but once Lithuania achieved independence, the crosses were put in place once again in 1989 as a mark of Lithuanian independence and identity.

The Vilnius Cathedral can be found on the central square of the Old City. Built in the style of the old classical Greek temples, the cathedral is an important tourist attraction. The cathedral is known for its important role in the history of Lithuania as well as the impressive collection of various traditional symbols, objects and stunning works of art that are housed within it. The cathedral was originally constructed in the 13th century and has since then been reconstructed several times.
