The excavation of the world's biggest Viking World house was started in 1983 and between 1986 - 1989 several specialists from the entire Nordic area arrived at Borg. For the first time, the location of the chieftain´s house could be precisely located. The excavations revealed that the construction on the site has started with a 67-meter tall building in the 500s. This building was rebuilt several times and measured 83 meters by the beginning of the Viking Age.
Several walls in the site are showing that there had been habitation before the chieftain’s hall was built but also after it had been demolished. In the beginning of the excavation some turf walls were visible and in later in the process the whole floorplan was uncovered. The chieftain’s house was divided into five bigger rooms and the excavations also revealed signs of entrances, walls, partitions and floors.
The Vikings were also excellent sailors. They travelled far to trade with other people and claim their land. Lofotr Viking Museum has two reconstructed Viking ships and one smaller boat. During the summer you can even try your hand at rowing one of the ships and discover first-hand how tough the Vikings worked for their world explorations.
