One of the prominent reasons behind the region retaining its individuality and distinctive character is that it is somewhat cut off from the neighboring regions and hence, in its isolation, the culture and distinctiveness of the place and its people has thrived almost untouched through the ages. From the thatched roof houses and windmills, to the locally home brewed beer and fences of stone, this island has a trademark appearance and character.
Traditionally the lifestyle and practices of the people of Saaremaa have been defined by its location and its proximity to the sea. While the men are at sea the women are known to work the land.
Churches In Saaremaa
There are several churches to be found on the island, a number of which are popular tourist attractions. The Jämaja church found on the Sõrve peninsula towards the west shore is one of the oldest. It is said that, although the current building was rebuilt in the year 1864, the original church was constructed sometime during the Middle Ages. The Karja Church is the smallest church on the island and this too was built during the Middle Ages. The church is popular with tourists, and is very well known for its unique architecture and decorations.
