Access to the area is highly restricted and civilian entry is not easily granted. The Star City facility is intensely guarded and is an important place in the Russian military framework. The military facility was built in the region northeast of the Russian capital city of Moscow.
The Star City military research and training centre is associated with the Chkalovskiy Airport, where an airfield is used to serve the military facility.
Star City Through The Ages
The decision to create an individual, dedicated facility arose in the period leading to the 1960s, when a need came about to create a specific cosmonaut training center as a result of the creation of the manned space flight program systems in the USSR. The then Air Force Commander in Chief gave orders for the establishment of a training facility for cosmonauts. As a result, on the 11th of January, 1960, the facility was established and then, eight years later, the Y.A. Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre was formed and named so after the first cosmonaut.
Details About Star City Military Research And Training Facility
In the period of the early 1960s, the pioneers in the field (the first space cosmonauts and also the space scientists involved in the projects), along with their families, called a neighborhood settlement in the Cosmonaut Training Center Campus their home. This complex came to be known as Star City and the population of Star City has been expanding ever since. At present, as many as 6000 people live in the Star City Complex, and it is estimated that 70% of this population is employed in the space field.
Later, in the year 1995, it was decided that in order to be able to effectively utilize and maximize the potential of Russia in terms of technical and scientific advancement, where cosmonaut training and manned flights were concerned, it would make sense to combine the Air Force Test and Training Regiment with the Cosmonaut Training Center, and out of this union the Y. A. Gagarin State Scientific Research and Testing Cosmonaut Training Centre was formed.
Star City As A Visitor’s Spot
While entrance to the complex is controlled, one can sign up with tours and guided programs to visit the famous Star City. The beautifully planned complex has an air of peace and quiet about it, which makes for a nice change from the rush of Moscow city life. The Yuri Gagarin monument is a specific attraction in the Star City Complex, installed in the year 1971.
