Zakopane is located in the southern region of Poland. The town has been categorized in the Lesser Poland Province from the year 1999. The town has often been referred to as the ‘winter capital of Poland’. It is home to the Goral culture and is located in the valley at the foothills of the Tatra Mountains in the Podhale region. Present close to the Slovak border, the town can be accessed by train and bus from Krakow. Zakopane has gained prominence over the years by becoming a successful skiing and mountaineering hub and has been rated one of the premier locales for alpine skiing. As per the records, as many as 3 million people visit the town every year.

Skiing and Mountaineering In Zakopane

Zakopane is a much sought after destination for tourists interested in skiing and mountaineering.

The winter season sees hundreds of thousands of people come into Zakopane from all parts of the world to make the most of the skiing opportunities the town is so famous for. December to February is the most popular period for those interested in skiing. One can take a cable car ride to the top of the mountain and then travel down the height on the ski trails. To make the experience a pleasurable one and provide a rest stop for skiers there is a fine restaurant found on the mountain top. For those interested in cross-country skiing there are several cross country trails found in the forest region at the edge of the town.

Mountaineering has become a passion with the locals and visitors from all over the world, especially from Europe, who come to Zakopane to try the mountaineering opportunities of the High Tatras.

The mountains have also become immensely popular with those wishing to absorb the natural beauty of the region. One can take a horse pulled cart during the summer season to the Morskie Oko Lake and spend time there observing nature at its finest. The route to the lake runs alongside a stream, adding even more spectacle to the path. From Morskie Oko one can travel two hundred meters higher to the next lake, known as Czarny Staw. This lake is the starting point for those who wish to climb Rysy- the tallest mountain in Poland. Both lake offer stunning views of the landscape and make ideal picnic spots. In the winter season one can travel to the lakes by way of horse sleighs.
