Exploring Unique and Exciting Accommodation Options for Northern Lights Holidays

Posted on January 3rd, 2025.

Travelling to the frozen north to see the natural phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis is a thrilling adventure. For many guests, it is a once-in-a-lifetime winter holiday and a bucket list experience!

While there are countless potential locations and holiday packages you might choose between, making the most of your trip is essential.

This is why we often speak with visitors who are keen to understand some of the most magical places to stay close to the Arctic Circle or who want accommodation that offers a range of winter activities while having easy access for their planned Northern Lights chase.

Here, we’ve selected a small handful of the most unusual places you can stay, whether you’d love to combine the Aurora with exhilarating hikes over the glaciers or want to organise amazing accommodation that will make your trip unforgettable.

Exploring Unique and Exciting Accommodation Options for Northern Lights Holidays

Lakeside Wilderness Accommodation and Aurora Cabins in Finnish Lapland

Our first package is the Aurora Cabin & Winter Wonderland trip, a five-day short break where you’ll be based in the incredible Nellim Wilderness Hotel, with your final night in a private Aurora Cabin—a wonderful experience where you can sleep under the stars.

The warm, cosy cabins provide a perfect view of the night sky and Arctic air overhead. They are made with glass panels that give you an exclusive audience with the Northern Lights in the comfort of your own cabin.

Each cabin has a heated glass roof directly over the bed, with a fitted bathroom, shower, double bed and sofa bed, with pitched roofs that shut out the world—a romantic and relaxing experience for travellers and the finishing touch to a fantastic holiday.

Alongside the superb accommodation, guests booking this package to see the Northern Lights can:

  • Try snowshoeing into the woodland, looking for the Aurora on a 2.5-hour guided trek.
  • Spend three hours with a local guide on a festive husky sledding expedition.
  • Sample delicious cuisines with the package providing half-board dining.

This flight-inclusive holiday enables you to sample the most popular winter activities in northern Finland. Flights are available from London or Manchester, and the package covers checked luggage, return airport transfers, all taxes, accommodation, and, of course, ATOL financial protection as standard.

Based in the Ivalo region, close to Lake Inari, you’ll have a brilliant chance to see the lights in all their glory in a wintery wonderland backdrop that is equal parts rustic, charming, and comfy.

Northern Lights Norway Holidays With an Overnight Snow Hotel Stay

Next in our roundup of unique Aurora holidays is the Arctic Combo, a week-long adventure in snow-covered northern Norway. During this trip, you can sample a diverse range of accommodation options.

Designed to offer travellers a taste of all that Norway has to offer over the winter season, this package begins with a flight to Tromso, in the heart of the Aurora zone. There, you can visit numerous cultural sites and attractions, from the Northern Lights Planetarium to the Polar Museum and Arctic Cathedral.

With a day set aside for exploring and winter activities from fjord fishing to cross-country skiing and chances to try traditional Saami cuisine, on day three, you’ll board a Hurtigruten voyage in the evening, ready to head further north. Your cabin onboard is just the start of the excitement, with breakfast served in the morning as you view some of the most dramatic scenery in the world, travelling through the cold waters to Kirkenes and transferring to the Gamme Cabins.

During your time in Kirkenes, you’ll enjoy as packed a schedule as you’d like with a King Crab Safari led by experienced, friendly fishermen and a farmhouse feast where you’ll sample your own catch of the freshest seafood, served the typical Norwegian way.

While your stay at the cabins includes husky sledding under the polar sky, a highlight for many is the night at the Snow Hotel. This experience involves heading out on a snowmobile with your driver or guide and being met at the accommodation by your hosts and some of their beautiful reindeer.

Dinner is served at the fireside in the wooden restaurant before you retire to the astonishing Kirkenes Snow Hotel, a marvel of architectural engineering and sculptures, with a full complement of warm clothing provided.

Finally, you can start the new day with a rejuvenating and warming traditional spa treatment before heading to the airport for your flight home.

Venturing Into the Finnish Forests for a Northern Lights Holiday Experience

Our final featured adventure is a true escape from the world, where guests booking the Aurora Adventure Short Break can spend four days miles from light pollution and congestion in the centre of the Taiga forest, a rural setting deep in the Lappish wilderness.

Staying at the Wilderness Lodge Muotka is a chance to relax, unwind, and watch the Aurora soaring overhead with this stunning lodge on the cusp of Urho Kekkonen National Park, close to a reindeer farm and with breathtaking panoramic views everywhere you look.

Travellers have their own private room within the lodge, with excursions including:

  • A guided visit to the reindeer farm on snowmobiles with lessons on how to lasso a reindeer.
  • A journey to an authentic Aurora camp far removed from the noise and bustle.

Another popular activity is the tour of the husky farm, where guests can steer and handle their very own sled. During rest breaks, coffee and pancakes are served around the campfire, with the silence of the snowy forest broken only by the excitement of the dog teams.

As with all Baltic Travel Company breaks, you can review exact itineraries and details of the accommodation on offer before booking, with itemised optional extras and excursions to ensure you can plan your travel, stay and activities well in advance.

Each of the packages featured here represents some of the most memorable accommodations included within Northern Lights packages. However, if you have something particular in mind or would like to book your dream Aurora holiday, you are warmly welcome to contact our travel experts for help finding the perfect package for you and your travelling companions.
