Since they say Norwegians are “born with skis on their feet,” it is no surprise that this country as some of the most fabulous ski resorts in Scandinavia, and they go all out to give their guest the ultimate holiday ski experience. For an action-packed winter getaway, consider taking the gang to one of these wonderful Norwegian ski resorts where you can “get in the holiday spirit” while enjoying the thrill of tackling some of the most challenging — yet well-groomed trails — in the Baltic region.
Beitstolen
This cozy little resort in the Jotunheimen National Park northwest of Oslo — only 40 km away from the Fagernes Airport — is a wonderful place for the holidays, with many rooms featuring ski runs starting at your doorstep. Although small, it has developed a reputation for not being crowded and features 6 very easy runs, 4 easy runs, 5 medium runs and 2 difficult runs, all serviced by 13 ski lifts, the highest of which goes to 1050 m. Along with all the regular ski runs to keep you entertained there are snowboarding parks, night skiing, swimming pools, nightclubs and mountain restaurants. The International Ski Federation will be hosting this season-opening pre-Christmas Cross Country World Cup races at the resort each year through 2013. Open from November to May, it has a reputable snow cover and reasonable rates.
Geilo
Known as one of the classic ski resorts in Scandinavia, this century-old lodge was founded when the railway line came to Bergen, and had one of the first chair lifts back in the 1950s. Throughout the years it has continued to expand and develop into a wonderful alpine village with all the modern amenities, including six-seater chair lifts and terrain parks. The ski resort is divided into two separate ski areas, both offering runs that range from beginner to expert level and some of which go above tree line. Many of the runs are carved out through the alpine forest and lead across open powder fields. The handy ski bus service helps happy skiers get from their hotels to restaurants, pubs and shops in the nearby villages.
Hemsedal
One of the largest and most popular ski resorts in Norway, this ski location’s continuing success is due to the challenging terrain and weather– it can get very cold when the daylight shrinks to 6 hours during December and January since it is so near the Arctic circle. Although well equipped for beginners with 19 very easy runs and 22 lifts, this resort is nonetheless a favorite of experienced skiers and is even the site of the World Cup Super Giant Slalom. There are numerous nightclubs and mountain restaurants, although some reviewers caution that food and drink can be more expensive in some places and others, so budget-conscious travelers will want to use their comparison-shopping skills.
