Copenhagen: The Perfect Easter Getaway

Posted on March 21st, 2019.

Copenhagen can be a great city break destination any time of the year, but the Danish capital makes for a particularly perfect getaway during the upcoming Easter break. As the cold, dark winter months slowly recede into distant memory, spring rolls around Copenhagen filled with new vibrancy and energy, as the days lengthen and the sun begins to shine.

Over the Easter holidays, Copenhagen can, of course, be busy, but you’ll find the atmosphere in the city to be lively and fun. If you are looking for some wonderful Easter eggs, then the city is full of great chocolate and sweet shops, while the local restaurants offer you the chance to eat your way through some of the best Nordic cuisine in Europe.

Copenhagen is the perfect Easter getaway. To inspire your trip to the Danish capital, here are some of our favourite reasons to visit.

  1. Tivoli Gardens

Tivoli Gardens is one of Copenhagen’s most iconic, long-standing attractions, for both tourists and locals alike. No trip to the Danish capital is complete without a visit to one of the world’s oldest theme parks and, over Easter, it’s a particularly lively place to be.

The park dates back to 1843 and it’s full of great rides and attractions, including the oldest operational wooden rollercoaster found anywhere on the planet. You can also find the charming Pleasure Gardens at Tivoli and, during spring, you’ll see the flowers start to bloom.

  1. Copenhagen Ski Slope

Copenhagen’s newest attraction is an artificial ski slope that, rather strangely, has been built on the city’s rubbish collection facilities. It might sound unattractive, but actually, it’s a sign of Denmark’s forward thinking when it comes to resource management, as the centre is actually a power plant that turns waste into energy.

The ski slope makes use of the same location atop Copenhill, turning the power plant into a recreational area too. It’s the first of its kind in Europe, and perhaps is how the future will look across cities everywhere soon.

  1. Copenhagen Canals

Copenhagen is a watery city, with a great network of historic canals connecting different districts to the harbour. Canal tours are a unique way to experience the city, as you pass by some of its most iconic sights, including the famous royal palaces and the equally famous Little Mermaid statue.

Easter makes for the perfect time for a canal boat tour through Copenhagen, and you’ll see the city in an energetic state, as locals and tourists flock to the waterfront to enjoy the pleasantries of springtime.

  1. Nyhavn

Nyhavn is one of Copenhagen’s canal districts, and you’ll experience a small part of this eclectic area if you take a canal tour through the city. You’ll want to see more though, and Nyhavn has a lot more to offer.

Nyhavn means ‘New Harbour’ in English, but as the area dates back to the 17th century you’ll find some of the most colourful and historic waterfront houses in the city here, as well as old sailing ships moored up against the banks. Nyhavn is also home to some of the city’s best bars and restaurants, and you can sit out, overlooking the harbour, while you enjoy a great meal or a few drinks – or both.

  1. Michelin-starred Restaurants

Copenhagen is not just the culinary capital of Denmark, but it’s a leading player in the international food scene, attracting top chefs from around the world looking to innovate in a fresh and liberal environment.

The Danish capital has a large number of excellent, Michelin-starred restaurants to visit when you are in the city. Chefs here have developed a new style of cooking, known as New Nordic cuisine, which blends traditional Northern European ingredients with modern techniques.

Perhaps the best-known innovators can be found at the world-class Noma Restaurant, where you can find an intriguing array of specially prepared Nordic dishes, which have been given an unusual reinterpretation. Easter, of course, can be a busy season for all restaurants across the city, so make sure to reserve a table in advance so you don’t miss out on the opportunity for fine dining while in Copenhagen.

  1. Harbour Baths

Copenhagen might not seem like the ideal country to be bathing outdoors, but one of the best places to visit during Easter will be the Harbour Baths. If the sun is out – or if you don’t mind frigid water temperatures, and you’ll quickly realise that the locals don’t mind this at all! – then head to the waterfront and jump into the baths.

These outdoor swimming pools are perfect for relaxing, swimming and doing nothing at all, and you’ll find several across the city, concentrated around the public beaches and the harbour. Easter will see the start of the bathing season in Copenhagen, when the baths open for business.

  1. Cycling

Work off the Easter eggs and Danish dinners by exploring Copenhagen by bicycle. The city is incredibly bike friendly, and Copenhagen not only has an immense cycling culture but hundreds of kilometres worth of cycling tracks too. Easter is the perfect time to jump in the saddle, as the sun is out and the trees and flowers are coming to life again.

You can rent a bicycle for your stay, or you can join dedicated bike tours that take you through the most interesting neighbourhoods and to all the best attractions in Copenhagen.

  1. Aalborg

Take a trip from Copenhagen to visit Aalborg when you are in Denmark, as the city was recently named by the New York Times as one of their must-visit destinations for 2019. Aalborg is found in Jutland, and the small city is one of the most historic in the country, with a rich Viking legacy waiting to be uncovered.

As well as great museums and plenty of historical sights to visit, Aalborg is known as a cultural centre in Denmark, and you can enjoy visiting operas, catching plays at the theatre or dining out at some fantastic restaurants.
