The first King of Croatia, Tomislav, was crowned in 925 and it is from this point that Croatia claims its historic nationalism. Since then, Croatia has provided the battleground for Venice, Hungary, Naples, the Ottoman Empire and, in 1797, Napoleon. He, after a brief period of peace with the Austrians, took control of the Dalmatian coast, rekindling ancient memories by entitling these lands the "Illyrian provinces". After Napoleon's defeat, the area reverted to what was to become the Austro-Hungarian Empires.
The Great War led to the first manifestation of a combined Yugoslavia, which disintegrated during the Second World War with Croatia supporting the Axis. Re-established by Josip Broz, more widely known as Tito, after his Partisans established themselves as the only viable anti-German force, this loose federation survived until the 1990s when conflicts exploded between the Balkan nations.
