Finland New Year Holidays

Finns take New Year's Eve seriously - that is up until midnight, when the whole country finds all the fireworks they can and sends them off in various directions. This is not a party for the faint-hearted!

Helsinki, as the nation's capital and largest city, is the major centre for televised celebrations and Senate Square is the place to be. This large area, chosen by Czar Alexander II of Russia in the 19th Century to demonstrate the renaissance of Helsinki as a grand capital and flanked on three sides by Helsinki Cathedral, the office of the Prime Minister and the main building of Helsinki University, is the site for serious speeches, national anthems and patriotic songs. It is also just a stone's throw from the harbour, where the party goes on until the frozen Finns finally give up.

If your taste is for something slightly quieter, then go north and spend New Year in Finnish Lapland. We will wrap you up warm and take you dog-sledding, snow-mobilling and chasing the Northern Lights. We will feed you in your very own log cabin or join the Finns and gaze in wonder at a clear night sky.

We know Finland and we will take you there for a New Year's Eve to really remember.

Aurora Glass Igloo Short Break

The ultimate arctic experience is awaiting you in Finnish Lapland, with 3 nights in one of the iconic glass igloo's and the view of a million stars, or even the Northern Lights, floating just above your head while you are warm and cosy under your duvet. The Aurora Borealis are on most peoples' bucket list these days, and staying in a glass igloo in Finland is one of the best ways to enhance your chances of seeing the elusive Northern Lights.

More about Finland New Year Holidays

The United Kingdom may celebrate first footing and other quaint customs, but the Finns have their own New Year traditions. Try tin casting, where the metal is melted; cast quickly into cold water and the resultant shape analysed for predictions of your fortune in the year to come. Place various objects under a cup or plate and turn them over to see your future: a lump of sugar means sweet success while yellow yarn signifies disappointment. And pity the poor aspirant bride or bridegroom who asks a pig when he or she will be married and doesn't get a grunt in response - that means "not this year".
