Whether it be the jewel that is Helsinki, Finland's vibrant capital, or towns like Turku, Porvoo, Lappeenranta or Savonlinna, a Weekend Break in Finland is the perfect antidote to the grey skies of Great Britain.
Helsinki, with a population of under 620,000, is the ideal walking city. Stand in Senate Square and gaze at the Cathedral; the Prime Minister's office; the headquarters of Helsinki University and Sederholm House, the oldest building of central Helsinki dating from 1757. Tsar Alexander II is the statue in the middle, always surmounted by a sea-gull. Though the idea to relocate the capital of Finland from Turku in 1812 was Tsar Alexander I's idea, as Turku was too close to the former dominant power, Sweden, Alexander II has always been known as the "good Czar" and even though plans were mooted to move his statue after Finland's independence, they never came to fruition.
Turn round and stroll the brief distance to the Harbour, where you can view the Uspenski Cathedral, an Eastern Orthodox church opened in 1868, the ice-breakers used to ensure entry to the port and numerous food stalls offering the delights of Finnish cuisine. If you can avoid these enticements, walk on to the red brick Market Hall, little changed since its opening in 1889.
With direct flights to Helsinki from London and Manchester taking less than 3 hours, Finland is a great Weekend Break destination.
We know Helsinki and we will take you there.
