Geiranger, Norway - 4 stars
Union Hotel built in the late 17th century, was originally of wood, inspired by the Swiss, closely linked to Art Nouveau and the German Jugendstyle architecture, and identical to a timber-built hotel at Øye. In 1899, Julie and Karl Mjelva bought the hotel from its previous owner. The Mjelvas then opened an automobile manufacturing plant, a power station and a cooker factory at the grounds. The listing of Geirangefjord on the UNESCO World Heritage List is relatively recent, but the natural surroundings have long been an attractive destination for local and foreign visitors, who come to experience something that is truly unique. In the morning you wake up to the sound of waterfalls, you breathe in the clear, clean air and you see the breathtaking views across the Geirangerfjord. The fjord and the surrounding mountains make the perfect backdrop for a holiday close to nature. The hotel uses local and regional producers in their menu. From the local farms they source meats, fruit and berries and from the fishermen, freshly caught fish and seafood.
