Tash Rabat caravanserai is situated at the elevation of 3200 m asl. not far from Chinese border (Torugart). Its origin is a complete mystery; however, there is a hypothesis that it was built in 10th century. Researchers consider it to be a Nestorian monastery, others suppose it to be a victualing-house for the trade caravans, and third ones insist on its defensive function. September 2024
Overall rating: (5/5)

Hello Nikola,

We loved the trip – everyday was a highlight?? Bishkek was interesting with its ex USSR architecture as well grand parks / museums & boulevards.

Issyk kul, 150 miles long, more like the sea than a lake with lapping waves – serene – open air petroglyph museum by lake was a treat too.

At Tash Rabat –we bumped into some yaks, still following old Silk road. Had best of fun staying in yurts / camps set up by your partner - very cosy - can also see that local shepherds still use them while looking after their herds in summertime . We even got a sauna in yurt camp here – then cooled off with bucket of water from the river running beside –which was glacial cold , from mountains, – that was a scream! ??

Have to say landscapes were utterly dramatic; the trail around lake, snow capped Tien Shan mountains with open plains with herds of horses & cattle - & shepherds in baseball caps on horseback, yurts still lived in, red sandstone canyons, waterfalls & rapid rivers, steep hairpin roads – all were out of this world – and went on for miles & miles - much, much, better than any National Geographic magazine ??

Driver & guide were the best: guide spoke good English & Russian – which was handy, as we were doubled up with a Russian couple from Moscow – got on well.

Hotel , guest house, service, people, Dungan pagoda / orthodox Russian church - unorthodoxly built without a nail ?? - everything was great - we can only thank you again for organizing a superb trip for us – very much appreciated!!

Best regards from Mike & Tito

Transportation

Railway mostly serves domestic routes and is used as an easy and quick way to get from the capital to major cities of the country. There are some international routes, like to Moscow and St. Petersburg, but time spent on the way will be quite long.

Buses are one of the most convenient ways to travel between the Baltic States. Eurolines will get you between Riga, Vilnius and Tallinn. One way tickets will cost £ 15 - £ 20 and approximate travel time is 5 hours between the cities. Ticket reservations in advance are recommended.

Taxis are the quickest and most convenient way of travelling round the city. You'll find them located close to the main hotels. Usually it's quite easy to catch a taxi on the street, however, it's much better and safer to order one by phone. Taxi costs in all of the Baltic countries and Poland are approximately the same and a ride in the centre of the city will cost you approx £ 5 - £ 7.  Taxis in Finland and Russia are considerably more expensive.  It is always a good idea to get your hotel to book a taxi for you and ask approximately how much the trip will cost before you get in.

We would not recommend you to take public transportation within the city, as it's usually crowded and it may cause you unnecessary anxiety about where to stop.
