Day 1: Welcome to Denmark

Afternoon or evening flight from the UK to Copenhagen, spending the night in a Copenhagen airport hotel, as you have an early flight on Day 2 from Copenhagen to the Greenlandic capital Nuuk. Overnight in a Copenhagen airport hotel.

Day 2: Venturing to Greenland, welcome meeting & optional: Fjord Adventure

You fly from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq with Air Greenland, giving you 4½ hours to prepare for your Greenland adventure. As the aircraft approaches Greenland, the sight of nunataks and the enormous icy desert indicate what you have in store.
Kangerlussuaq welcomes you with a blast of fresh coldness
After arrival you check in to Hotel Kangerlussuaq. The location of the hotel is as central as it gets, you will find it in the airport building. You only need to bring your luggage from the baggage carousel to the reception. The rooms are spacious and you will either have a view of the “Koekkenfjeld” (Mount Hassel) or a view of the settlement and nearby surroundings. Kangerlussuaq is located beautifully between incredible mountains and close to the Ice Sheet. This is the only place in Greenland which gives you easy access to areas where you can experience wild roaming reindeer and musk ox up close.
After check-in, there will be an information meeting at the nearby hostel, Polar Lodge. Here you will get further information about the Kangerlussuaq area and its many excursion options. With all the practical information out of the way, it is now time to experience the old American airbase on a guided tour by bus, giving you insight into the area’s fascinating history and nature.

The journey to Greenland begins with a 4.5-hour flight from Copenhagen to Nuuk on Air Greenland, arriving for an exciting 8-day winter adventure. in Greenland Upon check-in at Hotel Hans Egede Express, your guide will host an information session covering everything from dining options to local excursions. You’ll also have the chance to finalize or book additional activities at this meeting.

Afterward, take some time to explore Nuuk at your own pace. Despite its modest population of 19,500, Nuuk feels like a lively, bustling city, home to government institutions, cultural centers, and a variety of recreational activities. Stretching about 10 kilometers across, Nuuk offers everything from concerts and museums to winter sports like skiing, which is particularly popular during this season.

Optional: Fjord Adventure

You’ll soon experience Greenland from the sea. It’s a wonderful boat trip, and we’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the views of some of the most beautiful mountains in the Nuuk Fjord. We sail out of Nuuk and into the large fjord system, the second largest in the world. The mountains in the Nuuk Fjord are beautiful and rugged, many towering above the sea. On our way into the fjord, we sail past the city of Nuuk itself, and from the water, you get a sense of how big Nuuk really is. We may also pass some beautiful icebergs. In the Nuuk area, they are not as big as in Disko Bay, but they are still beautiful and impressive. After enjoying a cup of coffee or tea, we sail on, and, who knows, we might be lucky enough to see some wildlife. Out here in the fjord, we’re also closer to Sermitsiaq, the beautiful mountain that is one of Nuuk’s most famous landmarks.

Try one of the many wonderful restaurants Nuuk has to offer in the evening.

Day 3: Nuuk, optional: City Sightseeing & Northern Lights Snowshoeing

Today can be spent at your own pace, and the beautifully situated capital city offers many exciting experiences.

If you have purchased the excursion package, you can look forward to a city tour and tonight, the highlight of your day, a Northern Lights snowshoe trip.

Optional: Sightseeing in Nuuk

The city tour, a unique part of your excursion package, includes a visit to the Greenland National Museum. Here, you’ll have the privilege of seeing finds from all time periods and civilizations in Greenland. After about 30 minutes at the museum, we continue around the area called Kolonihavnen. This is where most of the original houses from the 17th and 18th centuries still stand. On the way we pass Hans Egede’s house, the sculpture of the Mother of the Sea and the controversial statue of Hans Egede at the Greenland Cathedral. We then head to ‘Kalaaliaraq,’ the traditional market where locally caught fish, seals, and reindeer are sold. Now, we head towards Greenland’s government buildings and then the Greenland’s Cultural Center Katuaq, where our tour ends. You’re now as central as you can be, with great shopping opportunities. And many other exciting things to do.

The next program item in the excursion package is a Northern Lights tour. It’s a good idea to get some dinner before you leave. Nuuk offers many places to eat, so look around, ask your guide, or visit the hotel reception.

Optional: Northern Lights snowshoeing on Quassussuaq Mountain

Experience the Northern Lights even closer from a mountain peak! We head out in the evening and are equipped with snowshoes and headlamps. We walk up to the top of Quassussuaq, which, at 430 meters, towers gently over the airport. It’s further away from the city lights up here, which makes the Northern Lights experience brighter. As a bonus, you also see Greenland’s capital from above, with the many street lights shining down on the snow. The guide will ensure you have something warm to sit on, and then we’ll turn off the headlamps and enjoy the view while sipping a hot cup of tea.

Day 4: Flight to Sisimiut, optional: Sighsteeing & Dog Visit

The trip continues to the coastal town of Sisimiut. The hotel bus picks you up at the airport, and take you to 4-star Hotel Sisimiut, which will be your comfortable base for the next five nights. Check-in is followed by an information meeting with the local guide. At the meeting, the guide will tell you about the town, the area, places to eat and go, and you can confirm the excursions you booked from home. It is also possible to book excursions at the meeting.

If you have purchased the excursion package, the information meeting will be followed by a cultural-historical bus tour of the town, giving give you an impression of the town and what life is like north of the Polar Circle. You will also meet the sleddogs.

Optional: Sisimiut Sghtseeing by bus

The trip starts at the old heliport, which was one of the only gateways to Sisimiut until 1998. Today, the landing site is used as a dog kennel and the building is a club house for the local youth. Our tour through town will stop at the local market which is full of freshly caught fish and game. We pass the town hall on the way to inspect the original hunting and fishing houses which are still standing today. We continue to the town’s highest vantage point to take in the impressive view towards the south. Finally, we visit the old town in the center where original buildings from colonial times in the 1700s are now home to the city’s museum.

Optional: Dog visit

This is the experience for anyone who loves dogs and wants to learn more about sled dogs. You’ll get a brief introduction to life with the sled dogs and their history in Greenland. You can even touch some dogs and take pictures with them, but always check with the dogs’ owners first, as they are not pets.

Day 5: Sisimiut, optional: Winetr Hiking & UTV Winter Safari

Today is yours to enjoy Sisimiut. With nature on your doorstep and culture and shops in town there are plenty of entertainment opportunities, however Hotel Sisimiut also offers a range of excursions – and outdoor hot tubs!

If you purchased the excursion package, today there are two excellent adventures in the program!

Optional: Winter Hiking

Are we going hiking again, you may think? Yes! The Winter Hiking Trip focuses on snowshoeing. Waking in snowshoes is for big and small alike, and it requires no experience, as there is a guide that will help teach you about the use of snowshoes and rods. We walk towards the town’swaterworks, which is right at the end of the famous Arctic Circle Trail. We cross the path and move along the mountainside towards Lake Nilliasup, which is one of the two lakes that provide drinking water for the whole town. The lake is frozen so we can cross it in a southern direction and continue across a moraine, shaped by the enormous power of ancient melting glaciers. In the area, there are lots of polar foxes and snow hares, which we will try to spot and perhaps find one of their caves along the road. Depending on the amount of snow, on the mountains, we will be able to see traces of scrub strips and various soil species from glacial movements and the melting of the ice. At the end of the moraine, we can look out towards the David Strait and the breathtaking view of the archipelago and the Polar Circle area south of Sisimiut. Here we will take a well-deserved break and get a refreshment. There is also time to take beautiful pictures before we return home. On the return trek, we cross the mountain to another moraine and continue towards Sisimiut’s cross-country ski trails. Before returning to Hotel Sisimiut, we stop at the frozen lake, Spejdersøen (Scouts’ Lake), which is at placed the center of activities during the winter season.

Optional: Winter Safari

The winter safari is a trip into the amazing mountain landscape on our “monster trailer.” It is a huge sled that is being pulled by a snowmobile. On the trip, you get several stops, so there is ample opportunity to take pictures and enjoy nature. Nature is right outside your door, and you will very quickly get a sense of the difference between civilization and the wild nature. You sit on the big sled and experience Sisimiut’s hinterland. The tour’s route goes through the winter playground and, on the way back, we stop on a plateau so you can enjoy the view of Sisimiut and the Davis Strait. As you are being pulled on a sled, nothing is required of you (other than holding onto the sled), so everyone can go on this tour.

Day 6: Sisimiut, optional: Dog Sledding & Snowmobiling

Today is at your disposal. You can participate in excursions from the hotel, or you can take a walk on your own in the second-largest town in Greenland. If you’ve purchased the excursion package, today there is a dog sledding or snowmobile tour. Tomorrow’s program is the same, but you’ll go on the second of the two excursions.

Optional: Four-hour Dog Sled Ride

Dog sledding is a truly authentic activity in Greenland. For thousands of years, the hunter and his dogs have lived and worked together in this harsh, yet stunning part of the world. The sled dog is, therefore, an important part of Greenlandic culture and used to be the only means of transportation when the landscape is frozen and covered in snow. This is where you will experience complete peace, with only the occasional interruption by the sled driver shouting orders to his dogs. You will be sitting still on the sled while taking in the scenery, so make sure you are dressed in warm clothes. The sled trip will take you to the foot of Niujarfik, a natural stop before the steep climb northeast of Sisimiut. There will be a short break before the return journey – the perfect time to take photos while the sled driver untangles the leads. The price does not include rental of polar clothing and boots, and you will be two persons on each sled. This sled trip gives you a taste of dog sledding. If you think you can handle more of the winter life in the company of dogs, the hotel can organize a longer trip for you. You can organize this during your stay in Sisimiut.

Optional: Intro to Snowmobiling and Trip to the Backcountry

Have you never driven a snowmobile before? Not to worry! This tour is perfect for beginners. Your tour guide introduces you to basic driving skills, after which you start driving on a training track. With your newly acquired basic driving skills, you can safely go to the hinterland. The trip there is the hotel’s most popular snowmobile trip because it has a bit of it all. On the trip, you drive on long stretches, on smaller inclines, and tracks at a moderate pace through scenic paths into the mountains. The terrain is hilly and has good descents and climbs. In addition to the sense of excitement and freedom as you drive the snowmobile through the cool air, the absolute highlight of the trip is the spectacular view of the David Strait and the endless view of the rugged winter landscape of Qerrortusup Majoriaa. During the trip, there will be a longer stop to get a snack and something hot to drink and, of course, there will be lots of opportunities to take pictures.

Day 7: Sisimiut at leisure

Today, you’re on your own, but if you’ve purchased the excursion package, you’ll go on the excursion you didn’t go on yesterday. Also, every day in Sisimiut, you can use the beautiful Arctic Spa, Hotel Sisimiut’s hot tubs to enjoy the warm water even if there is a chill.

Day 8: Sisimiut at leisure or optional: Snowmobiling

It’s the last full day in Sisimiut and you can do as you please.

Many people get excited about snowmobiling, and understandably so. It’s super fun and exciting.

 Optional: Snowmobile into the wilderness

This wilderness snowmobile tour is perfect for those hooked on snowmobiles after the intro tour. On this adventure, you’ll ride solo and get deeper into the land around the Arctic Circle Trail. You’ll travel through various terrains, including frozen lakes and fjords, narrow mountain climbs, scenic panoramic viewpoints, and even a crossing of the dog sled trail. Along the way, we’ll stop at a small cabin by the frozen fjord for a packed lunch and a rest.

Previous ATV or snowmobile experience is recommended. Children under 18 sit in the back as passengers.

At night, the hotel offers a farewell dinner (excluding drinks), consisting of a delicious Greenlandic buffet.

Day 9: Farewell Greenland, flight Sisimiut, Nuuk - Copenhagen

Your Greenland adventure has come to an end – for now, at least. Via Nuuk, you will head back to Denmark, where it will be early evening by the time you arrive in Copenhagen. Overnight in a Copenhagen airport hotel.

October 2016
Overall rating: (5/5)

We have had a lovely time on Greenland - this is a beautiful country and we are already thinking of coming back - via Iceland next time! :)

Our highlight was the Russell Glacier. All of the guides and staff were great, but  we wanted to extend particular thanks to one - Kjelt - who took us for the tundra safari, ice cap and glacier tours. He was friendly, knowledgable, funny and always smiling! And he was the one who let us know about the glacier tour and his recommendation was why we booked! Please pass on our thank you to him!

If there is any formal feedback that you wish us to fill in, we are happy to do so!

Anyhow, speak soon - we need to start packing!

Kind regards

Mei

Hope all is well!

Just wanted to say we had an absolutely incredible time in Greenland. Loved every bit of the itinerary you put together and the guides at WOG were awesome throughout. So much that we crammed in another tour to a frozen waterfall which was great. Think the highlights for me were definitely the dog sledding which we got some good photos (will have to send them over) and the glacier walk. Unfortunately we didn't see the northern lights on the Friday Tour however on our last night when we went to the Greenlandic buffet restaurant we were lucky enough to see them for around 10 minutes which was pretty magical.

I love the cold weather and think one day it got to around -25 which I thought was fantastic but was actually quite mild otherwise.

Would definitely go back and see more of this vast, beautiful country!!! It was fascinating.

Overall had an amazing adventure and can't wait for the next one in a few weeks.

Best Wishes,

Tom P

Will I see the Northern Lights?

Please scroll down to see the specifics for the country you wish to visit:

Iceland:
The Northern Lights are in the Northern sky from September through April but are only visible when the sky is clear and free of clouds. Like many of natures wonders, it’s ephemeral – they may be visible, they may appear for a bit and then be gone. But it’s worth it to be patient. Because they’re a winter event, you need to be prepared to wait outside, while looking for them. It’s best to dress very warmly, in layers, with good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else will make you comfortable while you await this truly amazing event. The Northern Lights can be pretty spectacular, and for the best photos we recommend using a tripod. Much of Iceland offers a very a good chance to see the Northern Lights when conditions are right. Remember – the Northern Lights are natural phenomena, not guaranteed, but appreciated all the more for their elusive qualities.

Norway:
Northern Norway is one of the world's best places to experience the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). In Northern Norway, Northern Lights occur in up to 90% of every clear night in the period from late September to late March. Most Northern Lights occur in the time span from 6pm to slightly after midnight, with an absolute peak at around 10-11pm.

In Norway, the area north of the Arctic Circle is prime aurora territory. The various destinations in the High North have a distinct personality, and are well worth exploring. Major places in Northern Norway are Tromsø, Kirkenes, Alta, Bodø, Lofoten and Vesterålen Islands and Svalbard.

Finland:
The best place to see the Northern Lights in Finland is in the Northern Lapland region, which is almost entirely located within the realm of the Arctic Circle. During the dark winter months here, when the sun rarely peaks its head over the horizon, you can expect to see the Finland Northern Lights with regularity, and other peak seasons include February through March and September through October. The most common colours of the Northern Lights are greenish-yellow and red.

The Finnish term for the Northern Lights, Revontulet, meaning fox fire, comes from an old tale where the fox was believed to swish its bushy tail on the snowy fell landscapes, throwing sparks into the air.

As mentioned, Lapland is the best place to see the Finland Aurora Borealis, with the Kilpisjarvi area offering the most abundant opportunities. The best time of the day to see the Finland Northern Lights is between 9 pm and 11:30 pm, though they are certainly not restricted to this time frame.

Sweden:
In Northern Sweden, the Northern Lights usually occur during the winter months through late March or early April, but they can be spotted as early as September in the Northernmost parts. Your best chance of catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights is on cold winter nights when the sky is clear and cloudless. You need to be away from city lights, which dilute the effects of these natural phenomena, so head out into the countryside. On clear nights, the Northern Lights can be visible from most locations in Swedish Lapland, occurring between 6 pm to and 2 am, with the strongest shows happening between 10 pm and 11 pm. For those willing to brave the cold on winter nights, here are some of the best locations in Swedish Lapland for viewing these phenomena:

Abisko National Park
Abisko National Park, a couple of kilometers north of Kiruna, is a prime location for viewing the Northen Lights. The scientifically proven “blue hole” — a patch of sky over the Torneträsk lake that usually remains clear despite overcast weather in surrounding areas — gives Abisko its own micro-climate, which is suitable for catching the lights.

Jukkasjärvi and the Torne Valley
Not only does the village of Jukkasjärvi (population roughly 541) boast the world’s first ice hotel (rebuilt ever year from Torne River ice), it’s also one of the best regions to view the Northern Lights. ICEHOTEL organizes guided tours for guests which takes the to the Esrange Space Center located 30 minutes from Kiruna. You can dine at a wilderness camp and get the chance to scan the Arctic winter sky for aurora borealis.

Other regions in Swedish Lapland
As mentioned earlier, if weather conditions are just right (clear, dark, cold, and cloudless), you might catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights from any location within subarctic and arctic Sweden — even close to larger towns such as Luleå, Jokkmokk, Arvidsjaur, and Gällivare.

Greenland:
The northern lights - or Aurora Borealis as it is officially known - actually occur all year round, but cannot be seen during the summer months in Greenland due to the midnight sun. The phenomenon is often seen around midnight and is best experienced on a dark, clear night in the period from September to the beginning of April. If you are travelling during this period, you can see the Northern Lights from anywhere in the country, whilst in South Greenland the northern lights can be seen from as early as the end of August.
