Serbian holidays & city breaks

  By Balkan Exp

Before recent times when Serbian holidays became part of the norm, and Serbia holiday packages offered luxury and ambiguity, the Serbian Empire was once larger than the Byzantine and covered almost all the Balkans. In 1345, Dusan the Magnificent - obviously a modest man - declared himself Tsar and in the next year elevated himself to Emperor, thus laying claim to the crown of the Byzantine Empire.

However, 10 years later Dusan fell prey to an unknown illness to be succeeded by his son, Stefan the Weak - the hint's in the name - who oversaw the steady decline of this vast territory, as the ascendant Ottoman Empire swept through the Balkans, finally subjugating the last remnants of Serbia after the 1389 battle of Kralovo Polije, the Field of Blackbirds, when Stefan had died and power dissipated.

More about Serbian holidays & city breaks

This segment of Serbia's history builds on a chronology that goes back to human habitation as early as Paleolithic times; encompasses the Neolithic period, the Iron Age and the advent of the Illyrians in the first millennium B.C.; and provides a major centre for the Roman Empire, giving this territorial colossus seventeen Emperors, including the first Christian Emperor, Constantine the Great, in 306 A.D.

After, at various times, centuries of Ottoman and/or Hapsburg domination, Serbia became an independent country in 1867. The Great War started in Serbia with the attack on its capital, Belgrade, and Serbia formed the major part of what became Yugoslavia at the end of that conflict.

During the Second World War, the disintegrated Yugoslavian states fought on different sides at different times, until unity was achieved by Tito and the second manifestation of Yugoslavia. which lasted until the fragmentation of the Balkans in the 1990s.

Luckily we've moved forward from the dark ages, and now Serbian holidays are the new growing trend! We have various Serbian holidays on offer, from summer holidays in Serbia to tour-focused Serbia holiday packages, we have something for you.

What to do in Serbia

Belgrade - literally the White City - traces its roots back to the ancient settlement of Singidunum in the 3rd Century B.C. It has been occupied by 40 different armies and razed to the ground on 38 occasions, only to rise phoenix-like to present today a modern, bustling capital.

The Belgrade Fortress sits above the meeting of the Sava and Danube rivers and is the most popular tourist site. Riverside cafes; an old bohemian quarter and many state institutions make Belgrade a good focus for a Serbia holiday package or a Balkan tour.

Nis (pronounced Nish) was known as the City of the Nymphs by the Celts and provided a military stronghold for Constantine the Great (see above). the founder of Constantinople. Mediana, located in a suburb of Nis, is an excellent 4th century A.D. site of Roman architecture with the first Christian church of 378 A.D. Nis Fortress, built in 1723, is the finest example of a Turkish fort in the Balkans.

Nis is situated in delightful countryside with nature reserves and accessible caves, another popular Serbian holidays attraction for those looking to explore Balkan history in further detail.

The National Park at Fruska Gora, an hour away from Belgrade, features the greatest concentration of linden trees in Europe; over 700 medicinal herbs; 16 monasteries hidden in its 22,000 hectares (54,000 acres); vineyards offering daily tastings and the 18th Century Baroque city of Sremski Karlovci on its edge, a great location for family holidays in Serbia, as well as any nature lover, browse our Serbia holiday packages in 2018 and treat yourself this year!

We know Serbia and we will take you there.
