Our guided tours in Ukraine include Kiev, Lviv and the major historic sites of this fascinating country, home to 42 million people in an area 4 times bigger than New York State.
Lviv, known as the Paris of Ukraine, dazzles the unsuspecting visitor with its fine architecture and fully justifies its standing as a major cultural centre. Founded in the 13th centre by King Daniel of Galicia and named in honour of his son, Leo, Lviv experienced invasions by the Tatars, as allies of the Mongol Empire, Lithuania and Poland before becoming part of the Kingdom of Poland and a major trading centre. In the later centuries, Lviv suffered attacks by Swedes, Hungarians, Turks, Russians and Cossacks, only being saved from devastation by the last attackers through payment of a ransom.
Lviv has been fought over throughout its history, even in the 20th century. Now it peacefully welcomes visitors to its charms and entertains them with great theatre, opera and ballet. the latter two in its magnificent Neo-Renaissance opera house built at the end of the 19th century.
