Autumn in Finland
Finland is so much more than Helsinki and autumn is the perfect time to explore this fascinating country of lakes, forests and great food. The tourist hordes have disappeared and the streets are quiet, but the days are still long enough to explore this vast land of contrasts. From Lapland in the north to the Swedish speaking islands of Aland in the far south-west, the traveller can enjoy a range of unrivalled vistas and experiences.
Helsinki is a great place to start, with an easy airport and a fast train into the centre where you are immediately surrounded by art deco and nouveau architecture of the early 20th century. As you exit the station, turn round to marvel at the stone giants that light the station square. The Ateneum art gallery appears in front of you and to your left is the chocolate box of the National Theatre with a statue of Alexis Kivi, Finland's first playwright in the Finnish language, to its fore.
Walk past the theatre and stroll round the lakes that encompass Helsinki - if you keep walking, you can reach Lapland without moving out of the forest. Finlandia Hall, the modern Kiasma art gallery and the striking vision of American architect Stephen Holl in the new Music Centre sit comfortably across the road from The National Museum and the classical Parliament builidng,

More about Autumn in Finland
Ainola is where Finland's national composer, Jean Sibelius, lived for fifty-one years and where he burnt his Eighth Symphony and other works in his domestic fireplace. This house is a short drive outside Helsinki, with great English-speaking guides and a lovely cafe attached.
Porvoo (Borga in Swedish - all signs are in both languages) is where the Treaty establishing Finland as a Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire was signed by Czar Alexander I in 1809. Crowded during the tourist season, in autumn this is a great town to wander round, visit the cathedral and shop in artisan shops and stalls. Just 30 minutes outside Helsinki and 9 kilometres away from the Haikoo Manor Hotel, a great place to stay on the Gulf of Finland. Treat yourself to a stay in the Manor itself rather than the somewhat ordinary extension and make sure you breakfast in the Library.
