Overview:

Combine a short break to Iceland with a day trip to Greenland. Stay in charming Reykjavik and take day trips to see the spectacular Icelandic nature, bathe in the world famous Blue Lagoon and fly over for a day in Greenland.

Only a two-hour flight from Reykjavik will take you to Greenland’s beautiful East Coast, home of the Ammassalik Inuit. Kulusuk is the gateway to East Greenland and this small settlement is an excellent introduction to the way of life in a settlement in the Ammassalik area. Kulusuk lies on a small rocky island between saw-toothed mountains and extensive fjords, and it is almost always surrounded by icebergs and a glittering Arctic Ocean. In Kulusuk you will find some of the East Coast’s most skilful craftsmen, whose tupilaks, mystical objects carved from whale teeth, narwhal tusk and other native materials, are of exceptional quality. Traditional hunting and fishing are still essential sources of income for many families in the settlement.

Holiday price is from £2,325 per person based on availability and two people sharing a standard double/twin room:

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival in Reykjavík, Iceland

Upon arrival in Keflavik airport, shuttle bus will transfer you to your hotel.

Day 2: Reykjavík City Tour & the Blue Lagoon

Breakfast at the hotel. We start the morning with a 3 hour Reykjavík city tour. We see the home of the world’s oldest parliament, the modern church Hallgrímskirkja, the lake in the centre of the city inhabited by numerous waterfowl, modern suburbs contrasting with the older parts of the city with their colourful little houses and much more. The afternoon is free for shopping and sightseeing in Reykjavík city centre. Depart at 18:00 for an evening tour to the Blue Lagoon. We drive through rough lava fields to visit the Blue Lagoon where you can relax in its rejuvenating geothermal water. The water is naturally very rich in minerals that are believed to have healing powers. Accommodation at the hotel of your choice in Reykjavik.

Day 3: Day trip to Kulusuk, Greenland

Breakfast at the hotel and make your way to Reykjavik Domestic Airport (located close to the city) for your flight to Greenland. Flights are operated by Air Iceland and duration is about 2 hours. Aircraft used is Fokker with 45 seats. Check-in time in Reykjavik Domestic airport is 1 hour prior to departure.

Flight schedules:
02 Jun – 06 Sep, Mon-Sat:
Reykjavik 10:15 - Kulusuk 10:05 / Kulusuk 14:15 - Reykjavik 18:05

01 Jul – 31 Aug, Sun
Reykjavik 10:45 - Kulusuk 10:40 / Kulusuk 14:35 - Reykjavik 18:30
(flight schedule is subject to change)

Please note there is a two-hour time difference between Iceland and Greenland in summer time.

Guided tour in Kulusuk: your tour guide will be waiting for you at Kulusuk airport. It is a 45 - 60 minute walk from the airport to Kulusuk village, with no transportation available. Therefore you must be reasonably fit to master the walk partly through snow and difficult terrain. We highly recommend to bring good walking shoes along and a daybag with something to drink (can be bought in the duty free store at Reykjavik airport after you pass security check) and a picnic lunch or snacks. It is not always possible to buy food and beverage at the local supermarket in Kulusuk. Weather permitting we’ll be treated to kayaking demonstrations and an ancient drum dance reflective of the indigenous culture. You’ll stay about 4 hours in Kulusuk.

Return to Reykjavik in the evening. Accommodation at the hotel of your choice in Reykjavik.

Day 4: Geysers & Waterfalls

Breakfast at the hotel. This tour takes you to some “must see” sights of Iceland. Drive around the fertile lowlands of Southern Iceland and visit one of Iceland’s most magnificent waterfalls, Gullfoss Waterfall, the erupting hot springs in the Geyser area (not everyone realizes that the word geysir, meaning a hot spring is originally an Icelandic word) and the outstandingly beautiful Þingvellir National Park where the world’s oldest parliament was founded in the year 930. Accommodation at the hotel of your choice in Reykjavik.

Day 5: Departure from Reykjavik

Breakfast at the hotel.  Free time for exploring Reykjavik in the morning. Airport transfer for departure.

Hello Daina,

Yes, I am well after having a lovely holiday to Reykjavik and of course a day trip to Kulusuk.

In reply to your question, Kulsuk was wonderful!  The first view from the aeroplane window was breath taking!  I had never seen a country covered by snowy mountains ( even though I have been skiing).  The sun was shining brightly, it seemed very near and the sky was clear.  It was 2C but I did not feel it.  The 6km return walk to the village was very pleasant and I was nearly sweating under my jacket.  The village people were very friendly and we were entertained by a drum dance performed by a young woman.  I am very glad that I chose to go to Greenland.

Reykjavik too was a lovely city and by the end of my six day trip, I seemed to know every nook and corner as I walked almost everywhere.  I did not go any food tours as there seemed to be too much food about and I am a small eater.  The weather could have been better, but I managed  and when the sun did come out it was warm!  My experiences -

The Golden Circle tour - I thoroughly enjoyed the two staged Gulfoss waterfall ( was better than Niagara) and the Geysir ( two types of hot springs ).

The Blue Lagoon - after an hour, felt lovely and hot in cold and wet Iceland.

Burid cheese shop - http://blog.burid.is/english was worth a visit, where the manager is very passionate about Icelandic cheeses. Address - Grandagardi 35, Reykjavik 101, Iceland

The Phallological museum which was unusual

The half day Lava tunnel tour was very informative.

Icelandic food that I tried and  liked - fish - cod and blue ling,  the meat soup made from lamb

Drinks-  beer and liqueur made from rhubarb - Rabarbara

Ice cream - Danish liquorice

Also had a large Skyr with fresh fruit  for one lunch

The Hotel -  it was very central, the staff were very helpful in all ways.  The room was spacious and faced the main square which I liked.

Negative points of the room - the shower cubicle was tiny.  At first I thought the slightly bad smell in the cubicle was from the sulphured water, later I realised it was from the drain.  I complained and it was probably rectified as it did not smell that bad anymore.

Thank you.

Thank you very much for your message. This was a very nice journey, beautiful places to visit. Departure/arrival times were more or less well respected, nothing seriously annoying. Hotel was fine. It's breakfast area was too small for the number of guests, was difficult to find a table in the morning. The WOW airlines was a bit low quality, especially their ground service was not on top of their job: check-in extremely slow, personel not able to reply questions or solve problems, I will not travel again with that company. Otherwise everything fine, nothing to complain.

Iceland was amazing. The Greenland visit was fantastic, most beautiful place I've ever seen. So I'm very glad with this short journey, planning to take a longer one at some point.

Thanks for organizing, it was very comfortable having all the vouchers and bookings in advance and I've had nothing to worry about. Thank you.

Best regards,

Noemi
