In Borgarnes town you will find the interesting Saga Centre. The prime objective of the Icelandic Settlement Centre at Borgarnes is to recreate the fascinating sagas surrounding the birth of this island nation. Multi-media and theatrical techniques are employed to help the visitor experience firsthand the trepidation and excitement of setting off over the open ocean for lands unknown.

After a stop at Borgarnes, pass the beautiful Eldborg crater on your way to the Snæfellsnes peninsula with numerous interesting sights. Drive across Vatnaleið Pass. On the north side of the Pass there are numerous beautiful craters. Continue to the charming town Stykkishólmur.

Overnight in Snæfellsnes area.

Day 3: Snaefellsnes Peninsula & Borgarfjordur (220 km/137 mls)

In the morning we recommend a very interesting cruise on the Breiðafjörður bay available daily during summer from Stykkishólmur among numerous islands famous for the rich birdlife where millions of seabirds, puffins, guillemots, cormorants, kittiwakes, fulmars and even the white tailed eagles nest.

After the cruise, drive to the west along the north coast of the peninsula, through the fishing villages Grundarfjörður, Ólafsvík, Rif and Hellissandur. Then drive around the tip of the peninsula with numerous interesting sights. Take a short walk to Djupalónssandur and visit Hellnar and Arnarstapi all with spectacular scenery and rich birdlife in summer. Drive to the east along the south coast of the peninsula. At the farm Ytri Tunga seals are often to be seen especially at low tide. Head for Borgarfjörður district and visit Deildartunguhver, Icelands largest hot spring. Continue further inland to the historic Reykholt, home of 13th century chieftain, writer, poet and a scholar Snorri Sturluson. Continue to Hraunfossar and Barnafossar, some of Icelands most scenic waterfalls.

Overnight in Vík area.

Day 4: Golden Circle (270 km/168 mls)

Head towards Reykjavik and continue to Thingvellir. Research has shown that Thingvellir is a natural wonder on an international scale and was accepted as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2004. The faults and fissures of the area show clear evidence of continental drift. Thingvellir is also the most historical place in the country and a place of exceptional beauty.

Visit the main sights at Thingvellir on the North West side of the lake. From Thingvellir, continue to the Great Geysir hot spring area with numerous hot springs and erupting geysers. The most active one, Strokkur erupts every few minutes. Continue to Gullfoss one of Icelands largest and most impressive waterfall. Continue to the south and stop to see the waterfall Faxi. Further down the road see the volcanic crater Kerið.

Overnight in Selfoss / Hveragerði area.

Day 5: The South Shore (320 km/199 mls)

Drive to the east along the South Shore and stop by the beautiful waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. During the summer you can walk behind Seljalandsfoss. At the hamlet Skógar you will also find the interesting Skógar Folk Museum. The glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull are towering above the area.

Snowmobiling is available on Mýrdalsjökull Glacier. Make a short detour to the glacier Sólheimajökull, where guided Glacier Walks are available, before continuing to Dyrhólaey nature reserve. Dyrhólaey is a nesting colony of numerous seabirds in summer. Continue to Reynishverfi, with a black volcanic beach, spectacular rock formations and thousands of nesting seabirds in summer.

Make Vík a turnaround point and return to Selfoss. Cross the plateau Hellisheiði, with a lot of geothermal activity and plumes of steam rising from the ground. Numerous boreholes have been drilled on Hellisheiði in the last years for hot water and steam, some of the cleanest energy available. Stop at Hellisheiði Geothermal Powerplant where natural hot water and steam pressure from the ground is used for generating electricity. Here, you can enjoy an optional tour through the power station and and learn about the eco-friendly geo thermal energy.

Overnight in Reykjavik.

From here there is a short drive to the Krýsuvík high temperature geothermal area with numerous hot springs and solfataras and boiling mud pools. From here, head towards the fishing village Grindavik and drive through interesting and rugged lava fields. The Blue lagoon is close to Grindavík town where a stop is a must.
