History Of Riga
The city was found by Albert of Bremen in 1201 with the aim of it serving as a base camp during the Northern Crusades. It evolved as an important centre for trade in the Eastern Baltic region during the heydays of the Hanseatic League. The Archbishop of Riga oversaw all activity in the region until the year 1522 when the Reformation Period began in the region. After the Hanseatic League came to an end, Riga got transferred to Sweden and then to the Russian Empire until 1918 when Latvia gained independence and the city was declared its capital, a position it retained through the Soviet Period and afterwards.
