Finland is a large, sparsely populated country that features barren Arctic landscapes in the North, thousands of tiny islands in the South, vast, unspoiled forests, crystal clear lakes in between – there are roughly 187,000 of them – and one of Europe's most fashionable capitals in Helsinki, Finland holidays are both breathtaking and precious.

What to do in Finland

During your holiday in Finland, you may stay in a Glass Igloo or Aurora Bubble, under the Night Sky and you will be able to see the Northern Lights from your own personal igloo with all modern comforts.

Or try the world famous Ice Hotel: Finland has it all. Finland's Northern Lights, surrounded by vast forests of trees, truly capture the wonder of the Far North. The combination of snow around you, the Finland Northern Lights, the atmosphere of Finland Christmas holidays or New Year holidays in Finland guarantee an outstanding experience.

Why Visit Finland?

There is a lot of mystery as well as many attractions in the Finnish Arctic, such as the Northern Lights and every child’s dream to meet Father Christmas. Days are spent enjoying the frosty climate, while evenings are for soothing saunas and crackling fires and looking out for the Aurora Borealis. The concept of the iconic Northern Lights Igloo is a relatively new phenomenon but works beautifully making it the perfect destination for tourists chasing wildlife holidays.

What Does a Trip to Finland Offer?

If you are looking for some inspiration, then the Northern Lights Igloos give you a view of the clear night skies, with minimal light pollution which makes up for a wonderful trip in this remote part of the world. Glass Igloos and Aurora Bubble Igloos also offer the possibility to view the wonderful Finland Northern Lights from inside, or outside, as you wish.

We can also offer Finland Skiing and Skiing holidays in Finland are fascinating with snow normally well into April. Finland Christmas Holidays and Finland New Year Holidays are also recommended.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Finland?

Finland is a country for all seasons, and the best time to visit Finland depends on the regions you are looking to travel to. Aurora borealis and snow mostly occur in Northern and Eastern Finland between December and April. The long summer months run between June and late August, with Midnight Suns appearing in June. This will provide a fantastic time to travel to Helsinki and Lakeland for Finland's fly-driving holidays.

Finland has wide open landscapes and vast forests, over 180,000 lakes, and 37 national parks. In eastern Finnish forests, ancient Taiga forests are habitat for brown bears, wolverines, lynxes and other native fauna and Lakeland with thousands of beautiful waters and serene lakes.

Are Backpacking Holidays Popular in Finland?

Finland is one of the most underrated holiday destinations in Europe, but that is precisely what makes it an attractive destination for backpacking and hiking experiences, since you will be bathing in its spectacular nature while avoiding the crowds. Finland hiking holidays give you the opportunity to explore this beautiful wilderness, away from the crowd and deep into its ancient forests and crystalline lakes. Finland's vast forest and lakes interrupted with small towns and villages are perfect for summer trips, especially in the North where the sunlight never sets during ten weeks at the end of the summer.

How to Get Around in Finland?

Finland has a variety of transportation options that backpackers can use to get around the country. These include biking, walking, car rentals, buses, and trains.

Biking is a great way to explore the country by yourself or with a group of friends. It's also an environmentally friendly option that doesn't require much infrastructure.

Walking is another great way to explore the countryside without having to worry about getting lost or dealing with traffic congestion. You can take walks in any part of Finland—even in the city—and there are usually plenty of trails available for pedestrians to follow.

Cars offer convenience for tourists and commuters alike; they're easy to use and provide access to almost everywhere in Finland. If you're looking for something more exclusive than public transport or just want some peace and quiet while traveling through Finnish towns and villages, renting a car might be your best bet.

Bus travel is very convenient if you need to get from one major city centre to another quickly, and it is affordable alternative to car renting.

Train travel is also a great way to see the country on a slow but scenic trip, and you can get up in the beautiful countryside. Trains also offer great views of Finnish towns and villages as they go by, making for an unforgettable backpacking experience.

What Is the Climate Like in Finland?

The climate conditions of Finland are temperate, which means that there is a moderate to cool weather with four seasons. The average temperature ranges from about -5 degrees Celsius in winter to about 25 degrees Celsius in summer. There's usually some rain or snowfall throughout the year but on average it's quite dry most of the time.

Dear Saija

We had a truly wonderful holiday in Scandinavia. Thank you for organising such a successful itinerary. Your comprehensive notes with directions and maps enabled us to travel without anxiety. All the transfers worked smoothly and we enjoyed exploring the three cities.

The hotels you chose were a triumph particularly the Indigo in Helsinki and Berns Hotel in Stockholm. The service at both was excellent as was the food. Nothing was too much trouble. The Radison in Turku was fine for one night but not special - very large and not as plush or individual, inevitably so.

We would certainly recommend you to our friends and would use your services again in the future. I am mulling over the idea of a holiday to Tallin and St Petersburg next year ... so watch this space!

With our grateful thanks for organising this holiday for us at such short notice, working around our booked flights.

Regards,

Sue and Quentin S

Dear Saija,

Many thanks for organising our holiday to Finland, which we enjoyed. Everything that you organised ran well, but  you should know that Hotel Savonia no longer appears to be part of the Best Western chain. We were able to find all the hotels on google maps before going to Finland.

Many thanks,

Peter & Alison K

Dear Saija

We enjoyed our visit of exploration to Finland and I thought you would find feedback helpful.  All the hotels were different and nearly all were good.

Apart from that, Finland was very interesting.  It was particularly interesting to note the difference between Finland on the side of the Gulf of Bothnia and Finland close to the Russian border.  We drove north of Rovaniemi to cross the Arctic Circle although it was frustrating not to have sufficient time in our timetable to go further.  My overall comment is that a 10 day holiday involving driving a fair distance every single day with only one night in each place was exhausting.  For the future, perhaps a more varied timetable might be better, with 2 nights in places where there is a lot to see and do, such as Tampere, Vaasa and Kajaani.  Obviously such a holiday would take longer than 10 days.

In summary, for visitors like ourselves who had not been to any part of Scandinavia before, the trip was interesting and educational.  We flew in, very low, over the islands in the SW part of Finland, so we can sort of say we saw that part of the country.  We hope, at some point, to make a separate trip to see Lapland.

Thank you for all your help.
