Overview:

The beautiful scenery covered with a mantle of dazzling white snow, the crackling frost and the magical winter darkness create a special atmosphere for the New Year’s celebrations. Wild Taiga is dominated by evergreen forests and dazzlingly clear-watered lakes and its area of misty blue hills is one of Finland's best known regions for guaranteed snow fall throughout the winter season.

A New Year break in Finland is perfect for a family holiday or a romantic getaway. Those who are children at heart can meet Father Christmas before he sets off for a well deserved holiday. On New Year’s Eve, we will celebrate with a special Gala dinner before watching fireworks and raising a toast for the New Year.

Kalevala Hotel

Kuhmo, Finland
Hotel Kalevala nestles on the shores of Lake Lammasjärvi in Eastern Finland close to the Russian border. This is a region of great tradition and folklore and a place where Finland’s great epic Kalevala still survives, indeed a place of true ‘Finnishness’.

Happy New Year to you too!

We had a really great holiday thanks. The hotel and the food were good and all the staff were really helpful and friendly. The coach transfers to and from the hotel were comfortable and on time. The highlight of the trip for us was the husky safari that we booked through the hotel - the company organising it were very professional and very friendly.

The snowshoe walk & snowmobile safari that were included in the holiday were well organised and interesting. However, there was a lack of information about what to expect with the taster activities and we felt that each one of them was too brief and there was too much time spent standing in queues in the cold.

The only problem that we encountered was with a lack of time between flights at Helsinki. On the way out we only just had enough time to get to our next gate before boarding commenced leaving us with no time to get any Euros at the airport or buy any food. On the way back, due to a delayed take off from Kajaani we missed our connecting flight at Helsinki and had to get a flight via Amsterdam the following day.

Regards,

Kim

Car Rental

You can rent a car, as long as you have a valid EU or international driver's license. Most cars will have manual transmission.

Transportation

Railway mostly serves domestic routes and is used as an easy and quick way to get from the capital to major cities of the country. There are some international routes, like to Moscow and St. Petersburg, but time spent on the way will be quite long.

Buses are one of the most convenient ways to travel between the Baltic States. Eurolines will get you between Riga, Vilnius and Tallinn. One way tickets will cost £ 15 - £ 20 and approximate travel time is 5 hours between the cities. Ticket reservations in advance are recommended.

Taxis are the quickest and most convenient way of travelling round the city. You'll find them located close to the main hotels. Usually it's quite easy to catch a taxi on the street, however, it's much better and safer to order one by phone. Taxi costs in all of the Baltic countries and Poland are approximately the same and a ride in the centre of the city will cost you approx £ 5 - £ 7.  Taxis in Finland and Russia are considerably more expensive.  It is always a good idea to get your hotel to book a taxi for you and ask approximately how much the trip will cost before you get in.

We would not recommend you to take public transportation within the city, as it's usually crowded and it may cause you unnecessary anxiety about where to stop.
