This tour takes you round the highlights of Norway by train, coach and ship. Holiday price is from £2,285 per person based on availability and two persons sharing a standard double/twin room. Single supplement is upon request.

(Outside these dates tour can be slightly altered as some ferries only run during the summer months)

Departure Dates:

SEASON
27 Jun - 21 Aug

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1:  Arrival in Oslo

Arrive at Oslo Airport, Gardermoen and take the airport express train to Oslo Central Station. Oslo is the biggest city in Norway, and its capital. Oslo has been Norway’s capital for over 700 years. The history of Oslo dates back to the middle ages, and the first settlement dates back to the year 1000. Oslo is located at the end of the Oslo fjords, and the city is surrounded by forest.  In 2007, Oslo was classified by ‘readers digest’ as the worlds' second best city for appreciation of nature and respect of the environment.

Accommodation at a 4* hotel or similar.

Day 2:  Oslo – Lillehammer (train)

Breakfast at the hotel and depart Oslo for Lillehammer by train. Lillehammer was the host town of the 1994 Winter Olympics. In Lillehammer we recommend a visit to the Maihaugen Open Air Museum, which tells the story of people in the Gudbrandsdalen Valley in the last 300 years, of life between the wars in the inland town of Lillehammer, and of homes and domestic environments in the 20th century. Also recommended is a visit to the Olympic Museum and the Olympic Arena (Lysgårdsbakken).

Accommodation at a 4* hotel or similar.

Day 3: Lillehammer – Åndalsnes (train)

Breakfast at the hotel. Morning departure from Lillehammer by train. The journey heads north through the Romsdalen Valley and continue from Dombås on the spectacular Raumabanen Railway along the Rauma River all the way to Åndalsnes. The railway is 114 km long and offers amazing view of the passing scenery. One of the highlights of the tour is the Kylling Bridge, the most famous and photographed stone railway bridge in Norway.

Accommodation at a 4* hotel or similar.

Day 4: Åndalsnes – Trollstigen – Valldal – Geiranger (bus)

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure from Åndalsnes by local bus. The journey goes up the Troll Road, one of Norway’s best known tourist attractions. The road has 11 turns and the highest point is 858 meters above sea level. Dramatic, exciting and the ultimate nature experience - this is the best way to describe it. A short ferry crossing will take you to the Eagle Road and to Geiranger.

Accommodation at a 4* hotel or similar.

Day 5: Geiranger– Geiranger Fjord – Ålesund (Hurtigruten)

Breakfast at the hotel. Depart from Geiranger, where you will embark on the Hurtigruten Coastal Steamer on a 4 hour cruise to Ålesund. The cruise follows the well known Geirangerfjord, with its waterfalls and mountain farms situated high up on the mountainsides, in places you wouldn’t believe people and livestock could survive. Arrival in Ålesund in the evening.

Accommodation at a 4* hotel or similar.

Day 6: Ålesund - Hurtigruten Cruise

Breakfast at the hotel. Day at your own disposal. Ålesund was completely destroyed by a devastating town fire in 1904, and rebuilt again in the Art Nouveau style, making it a truly unique town in Europe. The town centre reveals a lively urban scene with pleasant restaurants and cafés, and the picturesque Brosundet canal with its fishing boats. Sights of interest are the Atlantic Sea-Park, one of the largest aquariums in Northern Europe and the Sunnmøre Museum, an open air museum with an impressive boat collection and more than 50 old houses in beautiful surroundings (entrances not included). The beauty of the town can be appreciated from Mount Aksla, with a breathtaking view of the town and its mountains, islands and fjords.

Late check-out from the hotel in Alesund, room at your disposal till 01:00 am.

The ship arrives in Alesund just after midnight at 00:30 and departs at 01:30 am and arrives in Bergen the same day at 14:45.

Accommodation on board Hurtigruten in an unspecified outside cabin incl. breakfast.

Day 7: Hurtigruten Cruise – Bergen

Breakfast on board of the ship. This morning is yours to relax on board of the ship, seeing the beautiful west coast pass before you reach Bergen in the afternoon. Bergen is Norway’s second largest city and the world’s only city surrounded by 7 mountains and 7 fjords.

Accommodation at a 3* hotel or similar.

Day 8: Bergen

Breakfast at the hotel and use your morning to independently explore Bergen, the capital of the fjords. Bergen offers many attractions and sights of interest. Sights include the Hanseatic harbour Bryggen, Fløibanen Funicular, Troldhaugen, and the Fish and Flower market.

Accommodation at a 3* hotel or similar.

Day 9: Departure from Bergen

Breakfast at the hotel. Take the airport express bus to Bergen airport for your return flight.

*Important to notes:
Day 6 can not commence on a Saturday  & Sunday as there is no bus service between Hareid and Måløy.
The first and last week of the season, is on request as the ‘Troll road’ may not be open.  The road is open/closed subject to weather conditions.

Dear Inga

Thanks for your email. We had a lovely holiday, very enjoyable, very interesting and very active. Really appreciated travelling about on local transport, got a much better feel for Norway, and enjoyed seeing more of the countryside and chatting to the local people. Impressed with the efficient transport systems and friendly helpful people. Everyone spoke English so very easy for us. In general the hotels were excellent and all had fantastic breakfasts. Bonus of great weather  for 8 out of 9 days - we couldn`t believe it was 27C on arrival in Oslo especially when the forecast had been pretty dismal!  We would not recommend this holiday for someone with mobility issues due to distances transferring between transportation and hotels with luggage. There were times when some places were very busy due to the number and size of cruise ships. Returning to Norway we would prefer to spend more time in the countryside and coastal areas not visited by cruise ships and tours. We do like quiet and natural holidays however this was the perfect introduction to Norway for us. The connections, travelling and  booking arrangements were excellent. Thanks to everyone involved in making this such a lovely holiday.

Best Wishes

Edward and Helen

Hi Diana

Thank you for your email welcoming us back home and requesting feedback on our holiday.

In summary we have had a brilliant trip across Norway – fantastic country, breath-taking scenery and lovely people.  As overall feedback we would say it was an extremely well planned and co-ordinated trip which went very smoothly, with one exception, which we will explain later.  We could not have co-ordinated this trip on our own and we are very grateful to you, Baltic Travel and your partners Haman Scandinavia for making all of the arrangements.

If you would like more detailed feedback then we would say that train travel in Norway is fantastic though it is always best to have booked seats as there is no way of telling which seats are reserved or free.  We were evicted from our unreserved seats on the Oslo to Lillehammer train and had to evict a couple from our reserved seats on the Rauma Railway train.  All good humoured as it turned out and the conductor/guard said nobody knows which seats are reserved.  The hotels were generally good and some quite quirky which we liked.  Quality Hotels were the best.  The Geiranger Hotel was a bit tired but the location made up for that.  The Hurtigruten trips are just spectacular.  The flights were both set at good times but sadly the (chaotic) cabin service on British Airways is not what it used to be but fortunately the flight is short so not a problem.

The only problem we encountered was on arrival at Andalsnes by train there was no sign of the Veoy Bus for which we had the travel voucher.  A very helpful Norwegian made a telephone call and informed us that the bus service would not be starting for another week.  We telephoned Haman Scandinavia and within about 30 or 40 minutes they had hired a taxi to take us on the 90km trip.  This became one of the highlights of the trip as we were driven by Carolina who was very informative about the journey and all things Norwegian and she made a couple of stops at amazing viewing places including a stunning waterfall.  We were very grateful to Haman for quickly re-arranging the travel plan and to Carolina for making the journey so pleasurable.  We do not know what the cost of this might have been but, if reasonable, it might be a good optional extra for others making this trip.  What was for us  10 minutes of panic at being stranded turned into a very enjoyable afternoon.

We had a fantastic and memorable trip and we cannot thank you personally, your company and the Norwegian partner enough for the excellent organisation and clear travel instructions.  We are so glad that we travelled across Norway visiting cities, towns, taking in amazing mountain scenery and taking the Hurtigruten ferry through the fjords rather than just taking a fjord cruise.  We are pleased to have made the trip through you and would have no hesitation in recommending you to any of our friends wanting to do something similar.

With kind regards

Lyn and Paul

Transportation

Railway mostly serves domestic routes and is used as an easy and quick way to get from the capital to major cities of the country. There are some international routes, like to Moscow and St. Petersburg, but time spent on the way will be quite long.

Buses are one of the most convenient ways to travel between the Baltic States. Eurolines will get you between Riga, Vilnius and Tallinn. One way tickets will cost £ 15 - £ 20 and approximate travel time is 5 hours between the cities. Ticket reservations in advance are recommended.

Taxis are the quickest and most convenient way of travelling round the city. You'll find them located close to the main hotels. Usually it's quite easy to catch a taxi on the street, however, it's much better and safer to order one by phone. Taxi costs in all of the Baltic countries and Poland are approximately the same and a ride in the centre of the city will cost you approx £ 5 - £ 7.  Taxis in Finland and Russia are considerably more expensive.  It is always a good idea to get your hotel to book a taxi for you and ask approximately how much the trip will cost before you get in.

We would not recommend you to take public transportation within the city, as it's usually crowded and it may cause you unnecessary anxiety about where to stop.
