Overview:

Visit Dalarna and Sweden at its most authentic! Dalarna is famous for its scenic landscapes with red wooden houses and lively tradition of hand crafts, celebrations and folk customs. Here genuine folklore traditions are still very much a part of everyday life and in particular of feast and celebrations. The most famous one – Midsummer Eve is celebrated in late June with traditional food and dancing. The region is often referred to as the most Swedish of all Swedish counties and provinces. Combine this authentic experience with city breaks in the capital of Sweden - Stockholm and the second largest city - Gothenburg.

Holiday price is from £ 1,085 per person based on availability and 2 people sharing a standard double/twin room. Single supplement on request.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Stockholm

Arrival in Stockholm and pick up your rental car in the airport. Stockholm, the capital of Sweden is built on 14 islands and you are never far from water. Well-preserved medieval buildings stand alongside modern architecture and just outside the city, the archipelago of 24 000 islands is waiting to be explored. Sights of interest include the Vasa Museum, Skansen Open Air Museum, City Hall and the Old Town (Gamla Stan). We can offer a great variety of sightseeing options in Stockholm, please ask us for details! Accommodation at Clarion hotel Stockholm or similar

Day 2: Stockholm - Mora in Dalarna (316 km)

Breakfast at the hotel. Today you will head for Mora and the Dalarna region. When leaving Stockholm we recommend a detour to Sigtuna, a lively little town founded by Viking King Eric the Victorious. Sigtuna is the oldest, still existing town of Sweden. Continue via Enköping, Avesta and Borlänge to Mora, beautifully located by Lake Siljan in the Dalarna region. Lake Siljan and the surrounding landscape were created 360 million years ago, when a meteor fell from the sky and onto Dalarna. Accommodation at Mora Parken Hotel or similar (3 nights)

Day 3: Mora

Breakfast at the hotel. This day is at your own leisure to explore the many attractions Dalarna has to offer. We recommend spending the day in Mora where you can go for a walk along Lake Siljan, or maybe you would prefer to go for a swim? A visit at the Zorn Museum is also recommendable. Anders Zorn is famous amongst other things for his nude paintings, portraits and aquarelle paintings. The museum displays his works, in addition to parts of his private art collection. We also recommend a visit at Zorngården, former residence of the couple Anders and Emma Zorn.

Day 4: Mora - around Lake Siljan

Breakfast at the hotel. Today we recommend an excursion on your own to the peninsula of Sollerön, located about 14 km from Mora. The Museum of Local History there consists of 12 buildings, exhibitions and Viking ships. A walking path guides you around the field with Viking graves. From Sollerön you can continue to Gesunda, where a gondola will bring you up the Gesunda Mountain with panoramic views of Lake Siljan and the surrounding areas. Drive from Gesunda along Lake Siljan in southern direction past Leksand to the charming village of Tällberg. The houses in this small village are mainly made of wood. In addition to the village’s 200 permanent residents, this is a popular place for private holiday cottages.

Day 5: Mora - Karlstad (233 km)

Breakfast at the hotel. Today you will continue your journey south. On your way, we recommend a stop in Nusnäs located just 10 km outside Mora. Nusnäs is where the traditional Dala Horse – a national symbol of Sweden – is produced. You can follow the production process from the piece of wood until the complete and painted horse. Continue driving towards Karlstad, located just by the largest lake in Sweden – Lake Vänern. Accommodation at Clarion Hotel Plaza or similar

Day 6: Karlstad - Gothenburg (265 km)

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure from Karlstad in southwest direction towards Gothenburg. Gothenburg or the Swedish name – Göteborg is Sweden’s second largest city and has always been the natural gateway to the West. Gothenburg is a city characterized by international style, local creativity and a natural, relaxed charm. It has the pulse of a big city, cultural experiences, beautiful countryside and shopping, all within comfortable walking distance in the city center. In Gothenburg you can sense the history. The city was founded in 1621 and has ever since been characterised by trade, shipping and international contacts. Today Gothenburg is a city of industry and expertise, with two universities and many service companies. Accommodation at Quality hotel 11 or similar (2 nights)

Day 7: Gothenburg

Breakfast at the hotel. Full day of leisure in Gothenburg. We recommend a sightseeing tour onboard one of the famous sightseeing boats ‘Paddan’. Step onboard in the city center and spend the day exploring Gothenburg from the canals. For those who seek excitement and thrilling fun we recommend a visit to Northern Europe’s largest amusement park Liseberg! In Gothenburg you find fashionable boutiques, large department stores and picturesque marketplaces with handicraft, souvenirs and antiquities. The mall “Nordstan” is Europe’s largest, in the old estate area Haga you find lots of antiquities and in Gothenburg’s wonderful indoor market “Feskekôrka” you can buy or just look at all the fresh fish and the interior.

Day 8: Gothenburg - Stockholm (470 km)

Breakfast at the hotel. Today you will be heading back to Stockholm and the Swedish east coast. Arriving in Stockholm you will have the chance to explore the city further and perhaps visit one of its many cozy and excellent restaurants. Accommodation at Clarion hotel Stockholm or similar

Day 9: Farewell Stockholm

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure from Stockholm according to your return flight.

Package Includes:

  • Direct return flights from London Gatwick to Stockholm and return (other airport upon request)

Dear Daina,

We had a wonderful holiday.

Gothenburg was nice but the weather was a bit grey and rainy.  We enjoyed a museum and the Liseberg theme park.  Then UTO was just magical!  Very lucky with sunny weather.  We swam every day from stunning beaches. Stockholm was also beautiful and we loved the Vasa museum. But UTO was definitely the highlight!  Our water taxi was wonderful.

Both Scandic hotels were very comfortable.  We had a problem in Stockholm but they responded quickly and upgraded our room.

Thank you for organising it.  The only bad bit was the long train - no refreshments and it would have been good to have booked seats.  (Oh and Sweden is SO expensive!) Otherwise excellent.

Thanks

Clare

Dear Lena,

Thanks for getting in contact. We had a lovely holiday thank you and everything seemed to flow very smoothly. All the hotel staff were very helpful, on several occasions checking us in early, which was good as we then had time to do things after we had arrived, and the hotels well situated. We packed a lot into our available time. Our highlights were:

  • In Stockholm – the Vasa Museum, which was fantastic. We’d been a bit uncertain at first whether to go or not due to the cost for the 4 of us, but we were very glad we did.
  • The Viking Museum trip from Mora – which was very interesting.
  • In Gothenburg – We had a day trip on the boat to the Gothenburg Archipelago which was great. The location of the hotel in Gothenburg was good also, especially the restaurant on the top floor.
  • Best of all was that we were very lucky and the weather was pretty sunny most of the time – see attached photos.

We would therefore recommend this trip to others. The hotels can be busy at breakfast, especially in Stockholm,  but after a while we developed a strategy for avoiding the crush which worked well.

Our many thanks for all your arrangements and help.  It was good to know there were provisions in place should we have run into difficulties.

Kind Regards

Jill
