Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Iceland
Arrival in Iceland and transfer by airport shuttle to your hotel in Reykjavik. According to your flight, we can assist you in pre-booking guided tours and excursions during your first day in Iceland.
Overnight in Reykjavik incl. breakfast.
Day 2: Welcome to Nuuk
Breakfast at the hotel followed by transfer to Reykjavik airport.
Nuuk, Greenland's colorful capital, blends old and modern with fewer than 20,000 residents. Visit the waterfront's historic area to see Nuuk Cathedral, the Hans Egede statue, and the beautiful Mother of the Sea statue. Your expedition ship awaits in the harbor. After boarding and receiving your complimentary expedition jacket, settle into your cabin and enjoy your first dinner on board.
Day 3: At Sea
As we sail towards the Arctic Circle, attend mandatory presentations on AECO rules for Arctic operations and landings. Settle in, enjoy the ship's facilities, and join lectures on Greenland and onboard Citizen Science projects. We'll cross the Arctic Circle, entering the lands of the Midnight Sun at the height of summer.
Day 4: Icefjord
Today, we reach Disko Bay, renowned for its abundant wildlife and scattered icebergs originating from the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Marvel at the majestic ice formations floating in the deep blue waters and capture unforgettable images. In Ilulissat, visit the Icefjord Centre to learn about the region and hike to Sermermiut for breathtaking views.
Days 5 - 6: Uummanaaq Fjord
Beyond the Nuussuaq peninsula lies Greenland's 'Far North', where distances are critical and life moves at a slower pace dictated by weather and ice conditions. This region, perfect for our expedition, has attracted people for over 4,000 years, evidenced by intriguing archaeological sites such as the famed Qilakitsoq mummies. Activities may include visiting small communities like Uummannaq or Ukkusissat, exploring Qilakitsok's archaeological site, and navigating the inner fjords for ice cruising with our expedition boats.
Days 7 - 9: Disko Bay
Disko Bay is truly magnificent. Its deep blue waters are dotted with icebergs of all sizes, some weighing up to seven million tonnes. The ice fjord here produces more glacial ice daily than New York City consumes in a year.
During our exploration, we'll discover traditional communities, vast glaciers, and expansive wilderness. Highlights include Vaigat Sound, Disko Island, and the eastern fjords. We'll adapt our plans to local weather and ice conditions, ensuring memorable nature landings, whale watching from the deck, and insightful talks by the Expedition Team. Keep your eyes peeled for reindeer herds, Arctic foxes, and gyrfalcons during our adventures ashore.
Days 10 - 11: West Greenland
Greenland's central west coast offers dramatic contrasts with its longest fjords and scattered settlements, including the island's second-largest town. Despite its vastness and sparse population, this region exudes a profound sense of remoteness and isolation.
Heading south, we'll explore communities where ancient traditions endure, like Sisimiut, situated just 25 miles north of the Arctic Circle. This modern town coexists with archaeological sites dating back over 4,000 years. Visit the local museum for insights into the ancient Saqqaq culture and consider picking up a unique souvenir like a qiviut scarf, hat, or mittens—crafted from the musk ox's exceptionally warm inner wool.
Day 12: End of expedition in Nuuk
Today, as we arrive at Nuuk, you will say a fond farewell to MS Fridtjof Nansen, her crew, the Expedition Team and the new friends you will have made. The lively capital of Greenland is a metropolis compared to all other towns in the country you have visited over the last couple of weeks. If you have time before flying back home, it is a fascinating window onto modern Greenland.
From here, you'll catch a flight back to Reykjavík, taking with you a wealth of fantastic memories that will no doubt endure.
Overnight in Reykjavik incl. breakfast.
