Day 8: Farewell Iceland (50 km/31 mls)

Individual transfer by Flybus airport shuttle from your accommodation in Reykjavík to Keflavík Airport.

Accommodation: Comfort tourist-class hotels (subject to change)

  •     Reykjavik: Hotel Klettur or similar
  •     West Iceland: Icelandair Hotel Hamar (2 nights)
  •     South Iceland: Landhotel in Hella (1 night)
  •     Vatnajökull Region: Fosshotel Nupar (2 nights)

Daily driving: Total mileage without airport transfer is about 1.610 km (1.000 miles) which is an average of 201 km (125 miles) per day. You spend about 3,5 hours per day on the bus, depending on road conditions, traffic and daily distances. On some days the driving might be longer than on some other days.

Extra costs for dinners to be paid at the hotels: Fixed 2-course dinners with fish, meat or vegetarian main courses are available at the hotels starting at ISK 6.000 (about EUR 45) per person per night. Note, that the country hotels do not offer a la carte meals and there are no other restaurants nearby. Paying for a 2-course dinner directly at the hotel is less expensive than to have it included in the tour package

NOTE: Itineraries may be subject to change at short notice during severe weather conditions and certain outdoor activities/day trips may be cancelled during the winter season in Iceland. In these rare cases, where situations of force majeure apply, excursions/activities cannot be refunded but the local guides will try their best to find reasonable alternatives where and whenever possible.

NATURE FEES: There is a possibility that some of the nature attractions around Iceland might charge an entrance fee during the trip. These entrance fees are not included in the tour price and need to be paid by all tour members additionally on the spot, when entering any of these nature sites. Locations, amount of entrance fee, form of payment and other details are not known at the present time and are subject to change.

NORTHERN LIGHTS: This program includes a special six night Northern Lights Academy – which means that during 6 evenings there is a combination of presentations, lectures, a film and guided searches for the Aurora Borealis – the Northern Lights. All countryside hotels in this program offer a Northern Lights wake up call for guests that register for that special service at the hotel reception. The Northern Lights Exploration series are designed to spend 6 evenings in the countryside to maximize the chances of seeing the elusive Northern Lights, still the tour is dependent on weather and therefore sightings are not guaranteed. The Northern Lights are in the northern hemisphere from September through April but are only visible when the sky is clear and free of clouds. Like many of natural wonders, the Northern Lights are ephemeral – they may be visible, they may appear for a bit and then be gone (it is not a TV show that you can just turn on and off). But it is worth the patience which is much required. Because they are a winter event, you need to be prepared to wait outside while looking for them. It is best to dress very warmly, in layers, with good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else makes you comfortable while you await patiently this truly outstanding event. For the best photos we recommend using a tripod.

Hi Inga

Very good trip, we were very lucky with the weather except the freak storm that blew us off the road, and in retrospect that was a bit of an added bonus. Stefan the guide was very good; he is a trained bass opera singer too and sang happy birthday to me! I saw the aurora 3 times; not great each time but better than nothing. I've added a few pics.

Hi Julija and Saija

Thanks - we had a fantastic time and overall the itinerary worked extremely well. All the hotels were very comfortable and convenient - great to just be able to walk to them from the train or ferry, so well picked. The Thon hotels in Oslo and Bergen, and the Clarion in Tromso, all offered a complimentary evening meal, which was great for us given how tired we got after sightseeing all day - and given how expensive food is in Norway! The Clarion hotel in Tromso was just great - right on the harbour, with a top-floor outside hot tub, and tea-time waffles for guests - wonderful. The Scandic Svolvaer in the Lofoten Islands was also great, we had a balcony overlooking the sea and mountains, and the hotel was quiet and comfortable. All transport worked very well and everything was extremely punctual - how unlike the UK!

Our only minor problem was that the taxi did not turn up in Tromso - they said they had no record of the booking, but we gave your voucher to the driver and he said he’d sort it out with his company and you, so we did not need to pay.

If you were doing a similar itinerary for others, I’d recommend having a day between the train ride from Oslo to Bergen, and the long day travelling from Bergen to the Lofoten islands - we did not book time in Bergen having been there before, but in retrospect it would have been good to have 2 nights there rather than just the one.

Overall it was great and a brilliant itinerary, sunshine throughout,  so thank you very much.

All the best

Diana

Dear Saija

We have had a wonderful week in Iceland. The arrangements all worked perfectly so a big thank you to you for fixing it up for us. The helpful notes provided by Gudmundur Jonasson/Baltic Travel made it clear that food was going to be expensive, which it was, especially in Hotel Laki where we spent 2 nights, so at least we were prepared! We also packed well thanks to the notes so we were ready for every weather and terrain. The guide (Antoine) was excellent and made sure that we we all able to make the most of our visit.

We really enjoyed the trip - everything that was on the itinerary was covered, so we visited an amazing variety of beautiful places. I think we experienced most seasons - we had sunshine, rain, hail and snow! - but despite the cloudy forecasts, we had periods of clear sky most nights and were privileged to see the Northern lights on 5 occasions. My main reason for wanting to book the holiday was to see the Lights - and they were amazing - but I think that the scenery was so wonderful that, for me, it eclipsed the Lights themselves.  We especially enjoyed the south coast with the lava beaches and huge chunks of ice sitting on the beaches, with views of the the immense glacier.

On the boat trip from Stykkisholmur, I enjoyed watching the crew trawl for scallops and sea urchins and the opportunity to eat them as Viking Sushi - an  unexpected treat. Even more amazing was the sight of orcas swimming in the the bay and a group of three white-tailed eagles sitting on an island until one took to the air, demonstrating its vast wingspan.

It has been a superb experience - thank you again for all that you have done to make the arrangements work so smoothly and for enabling us to enjoy such a wonderful holiday. I hope that we will be able to make another visit one day.

With best wishes

Helen

Hi Lena

I just wanted to let you know that Dave and myself had a brilliant time in Iceland, it was a wonderful holiday and the hotels, particularly the three we stayed in away from Reykjavik, were lovely. We were very impressed with the organisation of the whole tour, and the guide was very informative. And we got to see the northern lights one night! We have seen a spectacular display before in Finland but still every time is different and magical. We would love to go back some time. We are now thinking of going to Norway next Jan/Feb so will be definitely looking at booking with you if we can find the right holiday.

Thank you once again for everything you did for us.

Hi Daina

I just wanted to say what a great holiday that was, quite tiring and a week was just long enough. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even with the snow storms, and the fact that I slipped on ice and cut my head!! It was still amazing though ??

Thanks again for your help and I'll be in touch if need be.

Thanks

Hi Daina, Well we are home and just about recovered from what I can only describe as a fantastic holiday. The Northern Light Explorer Tour to Iceland was an unbelievable success and I would thoroughly recommend to all. Firstly I would like to thank yourself as a representative of Baltic Travel. Booking was easy, you gave clear, concise instructions and help where we needed it, including tips on what we may need to take with us etc. The logistics of the holiday were perfect. The tour operator that you use were perfect, extremely professional, reliable and most helpful. We had a wonderful guide (Anna), who moved the itinerary around to ensure we had the most enjoyment out of the holiday. We had a totally mixed group from all over the world, of all ages and I am sure that a lot of new friends for life were made. We have already spread the word amongst family, friends and work colleagues of what a fantastic experience we have had and thoroughly recommend to all.
Many Thanks
Martin and Penny

Will I see the Northern Lights?

Please scroll down to see the specifics for the country you wish to visit:

Iceland:
The Northern Lights are in the Northern sky from September through April but are only visible when the sky is clear and free of clouds. Like many of natures wonders, it’s ephemeral – they may be visible, they may appear for a bit and then be gone. But it’s worth it to be patient. Because they’re a winter event, you need to be prepared to wait outside, while looking for them. It’s best to dress very warmly, in layers, with good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else will make you comfortable while you await this truly amazing event. The Northern Lights can be pretty spectacular, and for the best photos we recommend using a tripod. Much of Iceland offers a very a good chance to see the Northern Lights when conditions are right. Remember – the Northern Lights are natural phenomena, not guaranteed, but appreciated all the more for their elusive qualities.

Norway:
Northern Norway is one of the world's best places to experience the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). In Northern Norway, Northern Lights occur in up to 90% of every clear night in the period from late September to late March. Most Northern Lights occur in the time span from 6pm to slightly after midnight, with an absolute peak at around 10-11pm.

In Norway, the area north of the Arctic Circle is prime aurora territory. The various destinations in the High North have a distinct personality, and are well worth exploring. Major places in Northern Norway are Tromsø, Kirkenes, Alta, Bodø, Lofoten and Vesterålen Islands and Svalbard.

Finland:
The best place to see the Northern Lights in Finland is in the Northern Lapland region, which is almost entirely located within the realm of the Arctic Circle. During the dark winter months here, when the sun rarely peaks its head over the horizon, you can expect to see the Finland Northern Lights with regularity, and other peak seasons include February through March and September through October. The most common colours of the Northern Lights are greenish-yellow and red.

The Finnish term for the Northern Lights, Revontulet, meaning fox fire, comes from an old tale where the fox was believed to swish its bushy tail on the snowy fell landscapes, throwing sparks into the air.

As mentioned, Lapland is the best place to see the Finland Aurora Borealis, with the Kilpisjarvi area offering the most abundant opportunities. The best time of the day to see the Finland Northern Lights is between 9 pm and 11:30 pm, though they are certainly not restricted to this time frame.

Sweden:
In Northern Sweden, the Northern Lights usually occur during the winter months through late March or early April, but they can be spotted as early as September in the Northernmost parts. Your best chance of catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights is on cold winter nights when the sky is clear and cloudless. You need to be away from city lights, which dilute the effects of these natural phenomena, so head out into the countryside. On clear nights, the Northern Lights can be visible from most locations in Swedish Lapland, occurring between 6 pm to and 2 am, with the strongest shows happening between 10 pm and 11 pm. For those willing to brave the cold on winter nights, here are some of the best locations in Swedish Lapland for viewing these phenomena:

Abisko National Park
Abisko National Park, a couple of kilometers north of Kiruna, is a prime location for viewing the Northen Lights. The scientifically proven “blue hole” — a patch of sky over the Torneträsk lake that usually remains clear despite overcast weather in surrounding areas — gives Abisko its own micro-climate, which is suitable for catching the lights.

Jukkasjärvi and the Torne Valley
Not only does the village of Jukkasjärvi (population roughly 541) boast the world’s first ice hotel (rebuilt ever year from Torne River ice), it’s also one of the best regions to view the Northern Lights. ICEHOTEL organizes guided tours for guests which takes the to the Esrange Space Center located 30 minutes from Kiruna. You can dine at a wilderness camp and get the chance to scan the Arctic winter sky for aurora borealis.

Other regions in Swedish Lapland
As mentioned earlier, if weather conditions are just right (clear, dark, cold, and cloudless), you might catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights from any location within subarctic and arctic Sweden — even close to larger towns such as Luleå, Jokkmokk, Arvidsjaur, and Gällivare.

Greenland:
The northern lights - or Aurora Borealis as it is officially known - actually occur all year round, but cannot be seen during the summer months in Greenland due to the midnight sun. The phenomenon is often seen around midnight and is best experienced on a dark, clear night in the period from September to the beginning of April. If you are travelling during this period, you can see the Northern Lights from anywhere in the country, whilst in South Greenland the northern lights can be seen from as early as the end of August.

Car Rental

You can rent a car, as long as you have a valid EU or international driver's license. Most cars will have manual transmission.

Transportation

Railway mostly serves domestic routes and is used as an easy and quick way to get from the capital to major cities of the country. There are some international routes, like to Moscow and St. Petersburg, but time spent on the way will be quite long.

Buses are one of the most convenient ways to travel between the Baltic States. Eurolines will get you between Riga, Vilnius and Tallinn. One way tickets will cost £ 15 - £ 20 and approximate travel time is 5 hours between the cities. Ticket reservations in advance are recommended.

Taxis are the quickest and most convenient way of travelling round the city. You'll find them located close to the main hotels. Usually it's quite easy to catch a taxi on the street, however, it's much better and safer to order one by phone. Taxi costs in all of the Baltic countries and Poland are approximately the same and a ride in the centre of the city will cost you approx £ 5 - £ 7.  Taxis in Finland and Russia are considerably more expensive.  It is always a good idea to get your hotel to book a taxi for you and ask approximately how much the trip will cost before you get in.

We would not recommend you to take public transportation within the city, as it's usually crowded and it may cause you unnecessary anxiety about where to stop.
