Visiting The Bryggen Region
Bryggen is a region that contains several ancient medieval quarters, and has several wooden homes in a riot of colours. These homes were once the houses of the merchants who lived and traded in the region. The entire quarter has a quaint, old worldly atmosphere that transports visitors back in time with its bright cobbled lanes, small artist’s workshops and cafés dotting the streets. The quarter is highly regarded as a specimen of settlements and civilizations of the medieval age. An important part of the quarter is the Hanseatic Wharf region, that comprises of many buildings that date as far back as the 17th century. The Hanseatic Wharf area has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The wharf in the region is known for its fish market where one can also buy souvenirs, fruits, flowers and vegetables.
Visiting The Bryggens Museum
Found within the Bryggen quarter region, the Bryggens Museum is an important archaeological museum constructed around some of the remains of the region, many of which go as far back as the 12th century. The remnants form a part of the collection along with skeletons, costumes, traditional dresses, tools, artefacts, ceramic pieces, domestic items, trade items, handicrafts and more. Seafaring items also form a part of the exhibits, all of which have been put together to reconstruct life as it was during the medieval times.
Spending Time At The Ole Bull Grave
The monumental cemetery has been built in the heart of the city. Built in 1837, the graveyard was mostly used by the upper class and wealthy inhabitants of Bergen. The name of the cemetery is derived from one of the most well known people in the region, Ole Bull, who was a composer and a violinist.
Pay A Trip To The Fresco Hall
The Fresco Hall is found inside the Bergen Exchange, which was constructed in 1862. The Fresco Hall is known for the beautiful murals that adorn the walls. These were painted by the artist Alex Revold and have often been touted as one of the jewels of the country. The murals have been divided into three themes which revolve around various panels depicting scenes within those themes. The three categories are the Bergen Wall, the North Country Wall and the World Wall.
