The Geiranger Fjord
The Geiranger Fjord is one of the most well-known and most visited fjords in Norway, and can be found in the Sunnmøre region. The Sunnmøre region is found in Møre og Romsdal county, which in turn is a part of the municipality of Stranda.
The Geiranger Fjord is a part of the famous Storfjord, which is the Great Fjord. The fjord measures 15 kilometres and derives its name from the village Geiranger, that is found close to the fjord. At this point the Geirangelva River drains into the fjord.
The Geiranger Fjord has won a lot of international acclaim as a scenic spot, and it has also earned the label of being one of the most popular tourist spots in Norway. In the year 2005, the Geiranger Fjord, along with the Nærøyfjord, was awarded the title of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, there have been recent plans and talks to construct power lines across the fjord, which may then result in depreciation in the value of the region’s beauty and charm.
Visitors can use the car ferry, which acts both as a mode of transport and as a method of sightseeing. The ferry operates along the length of the fjord between the two towns Hellesylt and Geiranger.
There are numerous scenic spots along the fjord. Many abandoned farms are found along the sides of the fjords, some of which are acclaimed tourist spots. Boat excursions along the region are popular, as are the numerous majestic waterfalls found along the location.
The Sognefjord
The Sognefjord is a famous spot in Norway, and is the biggest fjord in the region. It is also the second longest fjord in the whole world, the first being the Scoresby Sund, which is found in Greenland. The Sognefjord can be found in the Sogn og Fjordane county of Norway. The fjord measures around 205 kilometres, and extends into the village of Skjolden. The fjord is named after Sogn, which is a traditional district in the region.
