Tracing the History of Ancient Sweden
Since the 9th Century, Swedes were known to be merchants. In addition, the Vikings were ferocious warriors who raided much of Europe and went as far as the Black and Caspian Seas. Around the 11th Century, Nordic paganism was established in Sweden but later Sweden and Finland were conglomerated under the Swedish empire which was primarily a Catholic kingdom. The first sight of modern Sweden was seen in the 16th century which was when the movement to re-establish the Kalmar union was crushed. Moreover, the Roman Catholic church was abolished from Sweden and a phase of reformation was seen.
The Swedish empire lasted for a good part of the 16th to 18th century with the monarchy battling several wars to retain the sovereignty of the nation. Significant among the battles fought by the Swedes, was the Great Northern War which was won against heavy odds. The armies of the Poles, Saxons and Russia all pooled in and took on the Swedes who were completely outnumbered but still emerged victorious.
Medieval and Modern Sweden
The 19th Century was a significant time in the history of Sweden as it started off with the union with Norway. Despite the union of both, when Norway tried to impose its sovereignty, the Swedes invaded to enforce their policies. This was the last battle that Sweden ever fought and since then the country has maintained neutrality at wartime and follows the non-aligned movement in matters of global peace.
Sweden has fast evolved into an industrialized, developed nation with one of the highest quality of life per capita in the world.
