Stroget – the pedestrian shopping street
Stroget is the longest pedestrian street in Europe and is a huge attraction for visitors due to its shops and the quality thereof, appx 250,000 visitors walk through here every day. The huge Cruise ships also find Stroget very attractive as you got all the expensive shops on one street. For example Royal Copenhagen for porcelain, Illums Bolighus for furniture and design, Magasin du Nord for everything, the Canal Tours, Amalienborg Castle ( the Queens Castle ), Nyhavn, Tivoli Gardens, Gammeltorv, Raadhuspladsen ( the City Hall square ), Hotel D'Angleterre, The Royal Opera House, The Royal Ballet, all within a square mile. Should you visit in the winter, the beautiful design combined with great architecture attracts a huge crowd to enjoy a stylish Christmas Market for a city break.
Stroget opened in 1962, the area is now ten-fold of what it was. The shops are also very help in having your shopping shipped all around the world and the staff are in general very professional and language is normally not a huge barrier. No wonder this city has a dedicated song, namely Wonderful Copenhagen, written by Frank Loesser.
