What Is the Best Month to Go to Iceland?

If you're looking for good weather, the summers months from May to August are ideal for visiting Iceland thanks to the midnight sun and the hot temperatures. However, if your holiday bookings are aimed at experiencing the aurora borealis, then you must know that the Northern Light season starts in late August and lasts until end of April, with the peak months of September and March.

What Are Iceland's Top Attractions?

No trips to Iceland are complete without visiting Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, mirroring the surrounding volcanic country side. The most northern capital in the world has nature lying right on its doorstep. Reykjavik gives you the chance to bathe yourself not only in the Northern Lights and the many geothermal pools, but also in the brilliant music and arts scene, not to mention the notorious night life! Trips to Iceland, to this truly modern city providing great food, amazing scenery, museums and shopping facilities have become ever growing in popularity with more packages becoming available by the day.

When arranging your Iceland holidays, be sure to ride down the surrounding ski slopes, visit the immense concrete wonder that is Hallgrimskirkja and enjoy the unmissable and panoramic view of the city from its 73-metre-high church tower. Be part of history in the beautiful wooden Hofdi House, and stand in the space where Reagan and Gorbachev in effect ended the Cold War. A visit to the Saga Museum in Reykjavik, will provide you with insight in Viking history and the Icelandic Sagas, one of which is said to have inspired J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of The Rings.

Enjoy a concert in the impressive Harpa Concert and Conference Centre or take a 40 minute drive out of the city and submerge yourself in the mineral rich, thermal waters of the famous Blue Lagoon, as popular for Summer Holidays to Iceland as for Iceland winter holidays.

Leave the city behind and travel further into Iceland's dramatic landscape, and see for yourself how the ancient battle between ice and fire still continues to this day, through the immense power outlets of raging water falls, gurgling whirlpools, active volcanoes and geysers ejecting their jet-like eruptions of hot water metres into the air.

What To Do in Iceland?

Iceland has been voted one of the top 10 destinations worldwide for whale watching, but if you prefer to go deep, you can experience some of the best and most challenging dives around, as you swim, snorkel or dive through waters of amazing visibility around the only geothermal underwater chimneys in the world, another popular activity among those arranging trips to Iceland. Want to stay dry? Try your hand at ice climbing, arctic rafting on the Hvita river or take a snowmobile across the Langjokull Glacier.

At Thingvellir National Park in Iceland, you can watch the Gullfoss waterfall tumble 32 metres down or walk between the American and European tectonic plates at this Unesco heritage site, the place of Iceland's first National Assembly dating back to 930 AD.

When selecting from our range of Iceland holiday packages, be sure to consider experiencing the crevasse-riddled outlet glacier of Solheimajokull and enjoy this magnificent frozen wonder with its ice formations and sink holes. Hike through Laugavegurinn amid endless hours of summer daylight and even more breathtaking scenery.

During your trips to Iceland, ensure you also visit Europe's largest National Park, Vatnajokull, and its blue iced glacier, gurgling whirlpools and cascading waterfalls. For the adventurous individuals, we can highly recommend a caving trek in lava caves and craters.

An honourable mention must however go to the four legged part of this remarkable nation, the Icelandic horse. This sure-footed, much admired and immensely strong little horse cannot only carry a very heavy burden, but is an integral part of Icelandic society and history. It is a living national treasure, loved and respected by all. They are anybody's to ride and have a special gait that makes it almost impossible for anyone not to enjoy the ride. So if you want a truly authentic way of seeing this country, let this intelligent, people loving, little horse lead you on a highly recommended adventure.

Reviews of Iceland Holidays & Holiday Itineraries

Hi Julija and Saija

Thanks - we had a fantastic time and overall the itinerary worked extremely well. All the hotels were very comfortable and convenient - great to just be able to walk to them from the train or ferry, so well picked. The Thon hotels in Oslo and Bergen, and the Clarion in Tromso, all offered a complimentary evening meal, which was great for us given how tired we got after sightseeing all day - and given how expensive food is in Norway! The Clarion hotel in Tromso was just great - right on the harbour, with a top-floor outside hot tub, and tea-time waffles for guests - wonderful. The Scandic Svolvaer in the Lofoten Islands was also great, we had a balcony overlooking the sea and mountains, and the hotel was quiet and comfortable. All transport worked very well and everything was extremely punctual - how unlike the UK!

Our only minor problem was that the taxi did not turn up in Tromso - they said they had no record of the booking, but we gave your voucher to the driver and he said he’d sort it out with his company and you, so we did not need to pay.

If you were doing a similar itinerary for others, I’d recommend having a day between the train ride from Oslo to Bergen, and the long day travelling from Bergen to the Lofoten islands - we did not book time in Bergen having been there before, but in retrospect it would have been good to have 2 nights there rather than just the one.

Overall it was great and a brilliant itinerary, sunshine throughout,  so thank you very much.

All the best

Diana

Hi Saija

Very many thanks for the email and indeed for all your help with this trip.  Absolutely no problems with the plans and we are definitely going to return to Iceland,  the scenery is just amazing!   We were surprised at how few roads were paved and just glad we upgraded the car - next time we'll go the whole way and make it an off road vehicie.   We also discovered that you can do a free Icelandair seat reservation any time after booking rather than waiting for the '36 hour check in window' like other airlines which was a bonus.

The only thing I would flag which may help other travellers is that two of the hotels had addresses which included a town name but weren't actually  anywhere near.   The Hotel Husafell is not in Borgarnes and the Hotel Vogur-Fennstrond is an extremely long way from Budardalur.  I'm guessing its an Iceland thing and that both are the equivalent of us using a postal town in the UK,   but the hotels don't come up on Satnav under the town name and had we headed for the respective towns we would have been at least 50 kms off course in each case .  Reading the feedback on Trip Adviser this is a common comment for both hotels, particularly the Vogue-Fellstrond.    That said we learnt from the first experience and with some google map back-up to SatNav it wasn't a great issue for us, although clearly it had been for others.   Once we found the hotels they were all excellent and the food was superb, especially at the Vogue.

Thanks again for all your work with the planning, a great holiday and we will definitely be using your good services again - hopefully quite soon!

Best wishes

Martin

Hello Inga

Thank you for your e-mail.  All the travel arrangements went smoothly, the hotels were a very good standard and our guide Kris was excellent as was the driver of the coach.

We enjoyed the tour very much, marvelling at the scenery and  we would happily recommend it to others.

If you want any suggestions we enjoyed the chef's choice pre paid menu's and my husband felt it would be good to offer this option at all the hotels.

Two years ago we did your Norway fiords tour and enjoyed the two night stay at Ballustrand ?giving us a free day mid tour.  Maybe there is not a town large enough in Iceland to include this option, which I would have liked.

Thank you for your help In making our holiday so enjoyable.

Doreen

Hi Daina,

Just a quick update about the Iceland trip. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was very impressed with Gray Line. The weather was pretty bad, but I'm aware that it's worse now!  I managed to see the Northern Lights on the Tuesday, I felt very fortunate as the trip was cancelled every other day!   The hotel was good too.

I'll definitely keep an eye on the website and use your company again in the future.  Thank you for organising everything, Kind regards Zoe.
