For country walking, Sweden is one of your best choices. From the Arctic landscapes of the Kungsleden to the country lanes and islands of the Swedish archipelago, Sweden presents a range of walking experiences for all grades and ages.
The Kungsleden is Sweden's most famous walking and hiking route. Its 440 kilometre length runs from Abisko in the north to Hemavan in the south and was originally conceived at the beginning of the 20th century. The trail is well marked. Fords are provided over uncrossable streams and boats for wider stretches of water. You will see Sweden's highest mountain, Kebnekaise, and visit the Sarek National Park. Abisko can be reached via Kiruna Airport or by train from Gothenburg.
At the other end of Sweden, Sormland is Sweden's southernmost wilderness and provides easy coastal walks and well marked trails through the Swedish archipelago of 24,000 islands. Nature reserves, secret beaches and manor houses will interrupt your passage in the most pleasant manner. One of Sweden's ancient provinces, the county of Sodermanland, in which Sormland lies, has been populated since Stone Age times and there are ten of thousands of neolithic remains and sites. In more modern times, castles have been built in Sormland, such as Oster Malma with its two wings by the shores of Lake Malma. Built in the 1660s, Oster Malma still retains its Baroque-style facade after 350 years.
